PLOTE to oppose Palaly base expansion

Civilians assaulted in retaliation

Twenty five civilians, all youth, including two girls, were admitted to the Valaichenai hospital today for treatment from injuries caused by a group of Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldiers who roamed the villages of Kannankiramam, Kannakipuram, Puthukkudiyiruppu, Vinayakapuram this morning from about 8 a.m. to 10.30 a.m., intimidating and assaulting young people in the area.

Paramilitary groups seek role in captured areas

The Liberation Tigers shot dead a Sri Lankan Army (SLA) soldier in the high security zone near the Pradheshiya Sabha office in Valaichenai, about 30 km. north of Batticaloa, this afternoon around 1.15 p.m. The army and Police in the area fired mortars and automatic weapons at random from their positions indiscriminately in retaliation soon after the attack.

SLA operation in Vanni

Army sources in Vavuniya said that the operation was launched from Poovarasankulam, 15 kilometers west of Vavuniya towards Iranai Iluppaikkulam in the interior.
