Student feared abducted by SLA in Vadamaraadchi

Communication centre owner shot dead in Jaffna

Two unidentified gunmen on motor cycle opened fire Monday around 7:00 p.m on the owner of a communication centre located in Aadiyapatham Veethi area in Kokkuvil, Jaffna and escaped from the place. The seriously injured man was rushed to Jaffna Teaching hospital where he succumbed to his wounds, sources in Jaffna said.

Youth reported missing in Thellippa'lai

House burnt in Jaffna after clash between SLA, armed men

Tension prevailed in Thirunelveali area in Jaffna Sunday night as a clash erupted between a group of armed men and the soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) inside the premises of a vacated house that belongs to a popular businessman in Jaffna. The house was burnt down allegedly by the SLA, after the exchange of gunfire, according to the residents in the area. The SLA troops stationed along the Palaali road near Thirunelveali junction opened fire indiscriminately in support of their soldiers who engaged in the clash with the armed men around 7:00 p.m. Casualty details were not available.

ICRC Jaffna branch issues figures of victims receiving assistance

The ICRC has managed to airlift 1,500 of the patients in Jaffna in need of urgent and special treatment to Colombo, after September 2006, when the A9 highway which links Jaffna peninsula with the rest of the island was closed down, the Jaffna branch of the organisation assisting the victims of war said in a media release issued to media in Jaffna. The ICRC also provides year round assistance to 23 hospitals. The ICRC was contributing to more than 50 health assistance projects in the districts of Noth and East.

Musali displaced harassed by SLA, 70 families flee to Tamil Nadu

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Mannaar has ordered the displaced Tamil civilians from Musali division in September 2007, to present themselves at the 21-5 SLA Brigade High Quarters at Ilanthaimoaddai, on a village-by-village basis on allocated days, to obtain details of every individual and interrogate them for alleged participation in training given to civilians by the Tigers when their native division was under the control of the Liberation Tigers prior to September 2007. Around 70 families of between 450 to 600 families, all of them displaced from Musali division and living Naanaaddaan, have crossed the Palk Strait to Tamil Nadu during the recent days, according to residents in Naanaaddaan.

The church serves more than 80 resettled families in Allaipiddi.

30 SLA killed, 7 bodies recovered, arms seized in Mannaar - LTTE

030 Sri Lanka Army soldiers were killed, seven dead bodies of SLA troops were recovered after heavy fighting at Ka'rukkaaykku'lam Friday morning, LTTE officials told media. Five bodies were recovered Friday morning, LTTE spokesman Irasiah Ilanthirayan said. Two more bodies were recovered Friday night, according to latest updates by the LTTE officials. Two PK Light Machine Guns, three AK LMGs, five T-56 assault rifles and military hardware including ammunitions were seized by the Tigers. The SLA, while pulling back was towing an Armoured Personnel Carrier that had caught fire, the Tigers said. Ka'rukkaaykku'lam is located 2 km east of Adampan.

Jaffna University undergrads boycott lectures

Undergrads of Jaffna University launched a boycott Friday protesting against the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) search conducted Wednesday night in the students’ hostel, student leaders said. The search was prompted by an alleged hand grenade attack on SLA troops in the University vicinity. The Jaffna University Students Union (JUSF) accused the SLA and collaborating paramilitaries of staging the attack as a precursor to search the students’ hostel and to intimidate them.

Elderly man seeks protection with Jaffna HRC

An 61-year-old civilian from Puloali, Vadamaraadchi, sought protection Thursday with Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna, due to death threats by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops and SLA-backed paramilitaries, HRC sources said. Many Puloali residents are in protective custody of Jaffna Prison, the sources said.

Bomb hoax disrupts southern coastal train service

A parcel found in a compartment of a train arriving in Panadura railway station from Chilaapam on Tuesday created tension in the area, and suspended train services for several hours, sources said. Services resumed after the bomb disposal squad of the SLA took the parcel and found old clothes inside the package.

PLOTE member shot dead, 2 killed in Vavuniyaa claymore attack

Intense fighting in Mannaar - LTTE

Sri Lanka Army units launched an attempt to move its troops from Thirukkeatheesvaram towards Veaddaiyaamu'rippu in Mannaar Tuesday morning from 5:30 a.m. till noon with artillery barrage, but sustained heavy casualties, LTTE offiicals in Vanni said. Meanwhile, on another front where SLA attempted to move from Ka'rukkaaykku'lam targeting Vaddakka'ndal was confronted by the Tigers from 8:15 a.m. An Armoured Personnel Carrier was destroyed in LTTE mine, killing at least 9 SLA soldiers and wounding many, according to the LTTE.
