IDPs undergo hardship in Moothoor welfare centres

Final group of IDPs resettled in Eachchilampaththu

About 1150 persons of 290 displaced Tamil families were brought from Batticaloa district via Vaakarai by buses with police escort Thursday for resettlement in their villages in Eachchilampaththu division in Trincomalee. They are being sheltered in welfare centres before being sent to their own villages, divisional secretariat sources said.

SLA uses Muslim villagers as human shields in Mannaar

Around fifty Muslim families in the Muslim villages in Musali division in Mannnar are being used as human shields by the Sri Lanka Army that entered the area Saturday morning. Meanwhile, the Tamil civilians in Mu'l'likku'lam village, are moving to LTTE controlled area, sources in Achchangku'lam in Naanaaddaan division said. The area concerned is accessible to both LTTE and SLA but there has been no resistance from the LTTE, the sources added.

Census in East after civilian displacement

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Parliamentarian blamed the Government of Sri Lanka Thursday, for conducting a census in Batticaloa district after Tamil people were driven out of the district due to the military offensives, said R. Sampanthan, MP, the Parliamentary Group Leader of TNA, Batticaloa district members of Parliament, T. Kanagasabai, S. Jeyananthamoorthy, Miss. K. Thangeswary and P. Ariyaneththiran, Amparai district MP, K. Pathmanathan and Jaffna district MP Suresh Premachchandran, in a joint press communiqué issued Thursday.

Verugal Murugan Temple to be sanctified

East Provincial Governor Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrema is reported to have instructed civil authorities in districts of Trincomalee and Batticaloa not to provide food and other relief assistances to Tamil displaced families frpm Moothoor east and Eachchilampathu division who refuse to be relocated in new lands allocated to them by the Sri Lanka government in other parts of the Trincomalee district. Moothoor east and Eachchilampaththu have been declared as high security zone after the military operation and civilians are not being allowed to resettle there, civil society sources said.

Arafa Nagar declared HSZ, Muslim families expelled

SLN orders 33 Tsunami resettler families to vacate homes in Point Pedro

Sri Lanka Navy, engaged in setting up a large guard post at Point Pedro Munai (light house) to fortify, has ordered 33 resettled families affected by 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, to vacate their new homes, according to the fishermen in the area. Meanwhile, District Secretariat (Kachchaeri) officials coordinating Tsunami resettlement in the peninsula have expressed fear that the move could affect hundreds of resettled families in the area.

Bishop calls for urgent help to Batticaloa IDPs

0"Around 1,53,000 Internally Displaced People from the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) held areas, are suffering without sufficient food, drinking water and other basic facilities for the last four or five days. The International community and humanitarian organizations should step in immediately to help the destitute people," Rt. Rev. Kingsley Swampillai, the Bishop of the Trincomalee-Batticaloa diocese of the Catholic Church said to media, explaining the dire situation in Batticaloa district and conveying his open appeal, Sunday.
