2 SLAF troops injured in Vavuniyaa

Unidentified persons triggered a claymore device Monday morning at Chaa'lampaiku'lam area along Vavuniyaa-Mannar road seriously injuring two Sri Lanka Air Force troops in a Buffel Armoured Personnel Carrier, on their way to Vavuniyaa from SLAF Poovaransangku'lam base. A civilian riding bicycle along the road sustained injuries.

Civilian abducted, 3 seek HRC protection in Jaffna

Armed men in a white van abducted a family man Monday around 2:40 a.m, from his house at Navaali north in Jaffna, after assaulting his family members, according to complaints made by them to Human Rights Commission (HRC) Jaffna. Meanwhile, three civilians, from Chaavakachcheari north, Maanipaay, and Kamparmalai, sought protection with Jaffna HRC due to death threats from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and SLA-backed paramilitaries.

2 injured in Claymore attack in Veala'nai islet

Two men, alleged to be members of the Sri Lanka Amy (SLA) Intelligent Unit and SLA-backed paramilitary group, were seriously injured Thursday around 10:00 p.m, during curfew hours, in Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) controlled Veala'nai, when unidentified persons activated a Claymore device hidden along the road, targeting the vehicle they were traveling in, residents in Veala'nai said.

Tigers displayed the weapons and ammunition recovered in the clash at Naakarkoayil FDLA ground offensive, launched by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Naakarkoayil in Northern Forward Defence Line (FDL), backed by heavy artillery and mortar fire, was withdrawn following one-hour long stiff resistance put up by the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) Sunday night at 11:30 p.m., LTTE field officials in Vanni said. Claiming that they inflicted heavy casualties on the SLA, the Tigers said they have seized weapons and ammunitions including Rocket Propelled Grenade (RPG) Launchers and Light Machine Guns (LMG). Three LTTE fighters were killed in action.

Explosives recovered in Mannaar

SLA fires into Jaffna University campus

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops opened fire into Jaffna University campus Sunday around 10:00 a.m claiming that a student shot at the SLA sentry post in front of the University, and rushed into the University premises, assaulting some of the students gathered at Kailaasapathi stage, sources in Jaffna said. Meanwhile, Jaffna University Students Union (JUSU) representatives said none of the students had shot at the SLA and that one student was injured in the SLA shooting.

Local and international activists, UN agencies and other humanitarian agencies discussed the present ground situation in Sri Lanka and explored ways to alleviate the suffering of the civilian population.

75 civilians arrested in Kotte, Gampaha

Seventy five civilians, most of them Tamil, were taken into custody in cordon and search operations conducted by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Police at Kotte and Gampaha in Colombo district from early morning till around 10 a.m. Sunday. The detainees were staying with the relatives and working in business establishments when they were arrested, sources said.

UK terrorism lawyers to explain civil rights

Leading British terrorism lawyers will Saturday address a public meeting organized by Tamil and other minority community groups in Britain on ‘Anti-Terrorism Legislation, Public Security and Protection of Civil Liberties.’ British Development Minister, Gareth Thomas, will be addressing the event, which members of the public are welcome to participate in, organisationers said. A press note by the Tamil Information Centre (TIC), which is chairing the event, said the meeting will “aim at addressing the fears of the community, and the threat to human rights and civil liberties.”

17 Tamils arrested in Puttalam

Three Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) Dvora gunboats were destroyed by the Sea Tigers Thursday night when more than 17 Dvora boats engaged in a heavy sea fight with Sea Tiger flotillas in the seas off Pulmoaddai. 3 Sea Tigers were killed in the fighting that broke out at 10 p.m. Thursday and lasted till 3:30 a.m. Friday till the Sri Lanka Navy boats were pushed back to the east port harbor, towing the damaged boats, Sea Tiger officials told media.

Thousands mourn slain priest in Mannaar

0Mannaar city stood at standstill and people flocked to the entrance of the city Thursday at 1:10 p.m. while the remains of Rev. Fr. Nicholaspillai Packiyaranjith, the Mannar district coordinator of Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS), killed allegedly by the Sri Lanka Army Deep Penetration Unit (DPU), reached the city. The reamins were escorted by Mannar Bishop Rt. Rev. Rayappu Joseph from Vavuniyaa to Bishop's House in Mannaar as thousands mourned along the way from Murungkan to Mannar. The priest was killed Wednesday when he was taking humanitarian supplies to displaced children in Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) controlled areas of Mannar district.

Eachchilampathu IDPs' houses destroyed to establish SLA camp

LTTE condemns killing of Rev. Fr. Packiyaranjith

Displacing the people by deliberate shelling and then killing the humanitarian workers who rush to assist the displaced is a strategy of "genocide," charged the Political Wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) in a statement issued on Thursday, condemning the killing of Rev Fr Packiyaranjith on Wednesday by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Deep Penetration Unit (DPU). Expressing "deep shock and sadness" at the death of a humanitarian worker and a religious clergy, the LTTE urged the International Community to strongly condemn the killing and other brutalities against humanitarian workers.
