2 journalists targeted in Kaaththaankudi

Masked men called a senior journalist of Free Media Movement (FMM) out of his house Wednesday 10:30 p.m. in Kaaththaankudi, flung chili powder on his face, and stoned him, but he managed to escape unhurt through the backdoor, sources in Kaaththaankudi said. Meanwhile, unidentified persons set fire to the house of a senior journalist of Rupavahini Televsion causing damage to a section of the house. The news broadcast on Independent TV about Kaaththaankudi residents calling the members of their area not to participate in the first sitting of the Eastern Province Council is said to be the reason for the above attacks, the sources added.

Mob attacks ambulance in Kaththaankudi

The ambulance subjected to attackNine civilians, 6 of them patients and 3 medical staff, were wounded Thursday around 11:00 a.m. when a mob stoned an ambulance which was on its way to Batticaloa Hospital from Akkaraippattu Base Hospital. The angry Muslim mob was not aware that it was attacking an ambulance with 6 Muslims, Police said. Tension prevails in Kaaththaankudi and the surrounding areas. Meanwhile, medical staff at Batticaloa Teaching hospital staged a protest rally towards Batticaloa Police protesting against the security laps in the area where tension prevailed Thursday and demanded improved security measures for medical workers and ambulances.

16 Tamils wounded in mob attack in Kaaththaankudi

Sixteen Tamil civilians, traveling in a private bus, lorry and another vehicle on Batticaloa Kalmunai road were wounded when a Muslim mob armed with stones and batons attacked them in Kaththaankudi around 10:30 a.m., following a rumour that a Muslim trader was knifed in Araiyampathi. Sri Lankan Special Task Force (STF) opened fire to disperse the crowd and brought the said Muslim trader to the street to show that he was unhurt, police officials said. 26 Tamils were wounded. 16 Tamils including 3 females and a 12-year-old minor were admitted to the district hospital in Aaraiyampathi and four of them were transferred to Batticaloa Teaching hospital.

Two vehicles belonging to Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB), Kalladi in Batticaloa district, escorted by Special Task Force (STF) troops, were attacked Monday noon at Telecommunication centre junction, Kaaththaankudi by a mob of Muslim youths, resulting in an employee of CEB being injured and both CEB vehicles receiving damages, officials form Kallady CEB office said.

300 families displaced in Ea'raavoor

More than 300 families have temporarily displaced from the Tami - Musim border villages in Ea'raavoor. Although normalcy is returning, tension prevails in the border villages and the Sri Lankan armed forces are deployed along the main road and the traffic was restored, according to the Police. Several Tamil families who have sought refuge at Thannaamunai Church are yet to return. The Church was assisting the displaced families and there has been no government assistance, the refugees complained.

25 Muslim youths were arrested and interrogated by the STF after the elite commando unit opened fire on the protesters, killing a mother and wounding a youth, on Monday at Ea'raavoor. Two policemen were wounded in the episode, Police said stating that the STF opened fire only after they were shot by armed men among the protesters. Meanwhile, Muslim representatives alleged that at least 14 of the arrested youth have been subjected to torture as the police was attempting to get forced written statements from the youth.

Muslims in Ea'raavoor on Sunday alleged that two more Muslims were abducted as they launched a shut-down protest against the paramilitary-cum-political party, the TMVP, that had promised to release two Muslims who were abducted on Thursday, when the group attacked Muslims after a key paramilitary operative of the group was gunned down in the Muslim town of Kaaththaankudi. Ea'raavor Police has clamped down a curfew from 2:00 p.m. Sunday till 5:00 a.m. Monday. Seven passengers and two conductors were wounded when Muslim youths stoned three Sri Lanka Transport Board buses in Ea'raavoor. Residents of Tamil village Iyangkea'ni in Ea'raavoor were seen fleeing.

Meanwhile, Ea’raavoor police had chased a group of Muslim youths who tried to attack the Tamils who had gone to Ea’ravvoor for purchase provisions Saturday, the sources added. Tension prevails both in Batticaloa and Ea’raavoor following these incidents.
