21 Tamil youths detained by Eravur police

More than 70 Tamils were taken to investigations by Eravur police Thursday morning around 9 a.m. in a roundup search at the Eravur Muslim Public market. 21 Tamil youths have been detained for further inquiries, said the Chief of Eravur Police Crimes Branch.

Another TRO staffer released

Tamils Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO) Friday said in a press release that one of the abudcted TRO officials, Ms. S. Dosini, has returned to her relatives in Chenkalady. "Word has reached TRO through the Non-Violent Peace Force (NVPF) office in Batticaloa that Ms. S. Dosini, PSEDC Divisional Coordinator Mamunai North Division, has returned to the home of her relatives in Chenkalady, a Government of Sri Lanka controlled area of the Batticaloa District," the press release said. The fate of the remaining seven humanitarian workers is not yet known.

Man shot dead by SLA in Eravur

Kandasamy Shanmuganathan, 31, a civilian, was shot dead by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troops Sunday morning at 10.30 a.m. in Eravur Vantharumoolai in Batticaloa. The incident took place in front of the Pathini Amman Temple iin Thevapuram sources said. SLA said they killed the man in self-defence when he tried to attack them, but the residents of the area said that Mr Shanmuganathan was on his way to buy provisions in a shop when he was killed.

Woman shot dead, father wounded in Chenkalady

Unidentified gunmen who entered a house to abduct a young man in Chenkalady opened fire inside his house as the family members spoiled the attempted abduction. The angered gunmen, armed with a T-56 rifle, shot and killed the sister of the youth, Eravur Police said. The victim's father was wounded in the incident that took place inside the house located on Boundary Road in Chenkalady, 13 km north of Batticaloa town, Thursday around 9:00 p.m.

SL Presidential Polls: Near Fizzle-Out in North East

0Very low attendance of voters was reported at the cluster-polling booths in the North-East as the voting in Sri Lanka to elect the fifth executive president began at 7:00 a.m Thursday. Situation in Jaffna remained calm in complete contrast to the polls eve marred with grenade attack incidents in the peninsula. At least six grenade incidents were reported in Batticaloa-Amparai. Two Tamil civilians were killed in Kalmunai. The voting continued till 4:00 p.m. Security was tightened throughout the country.

Grenade attacks escalate in Batticaloa

A grenade attack was reported in Batticaloa at Koolavady junction on Boundary Road Wednesday night around 8:15 p.m. A Sri Lanka Army soldier and a policman were wounded in the incident, police said. Another blast was reported in Chenkalady, Eravur around 9:15 p.m. Casualty details from Eravur incident were not available at the moment. Tension prevailed in Batticaloa and Amparai districts.

Two LTTE cadres said shot dead in Valaichenai

Unidentified assailants shot and killed two Tamil youths at Palainagar Junction on Batticaloa Polannaruwa road, 5 km north of Valaichenai Wednesday morning at 4:00 a.m. The victims were LTTE cadres, according to the Police. One of the victims was identified as Mr. S. Suresh, 28, who was allegedly arrested by the Sri Lanka Army at Chenkalady Black-Bridge Tuesday. The parents of Suresh said he was not a member of the LTTE.

Five Tamil youths arrested by SL troops in East

Sri Lankan Special Task Force (STF) soldiers arrested three Tamil youths at Paddiriuppu Bridge in Kaluwanchikudy, 24 km south of Batticaloa, and the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers arrested two Tamil youths at Black Bridge in Chenkalady, 13 km north of Batticaloa Monday. However, the Police in Eravur is yet to confirm the arrest of the two Tamil youths from Kaluwanchikudy, parents said.

Man reported missing in Batticaloa

A 30-years-old man, Mr. Karuppaiah Sasikumar, a resident of Kommanthurai, Chenkalady, was reported missing since 22nd of September, sources in Batticaloa said. On Tuesday Sasikumar's parents received a call from persons claiming to belong to the paramilitary Karuna Group who informed the family that the victim was shot and killed by them Friday around 6:30 p.m. and that the body had been buried.

A boat service, two ferry services and three land routes were blocked for all traffic between the LTTE controlled areas and SLA controlled areas disrupting civilian life as officials and school teachers were blocked from crossing the border, civilian sources said.

One SLA soldier dead, two injured in grenade attack in Chenkalady

Unidentified men riding in motorbikes lobbed a grenade and fired at three Sri Lanka Army soldiers in Chenkalady around 5:00 p.m. Monday. The three SLA soldiers, who were on duty on Batticaloa-Chenkalady road sustained serious injuries in the attack. One of the soldiers, SLA Corporal R. P. Banadra, 35, later succumbed to his wounds at Batticaloa hospital, Eravur Police said.

Two injured, 4 shops damaged in grenade attack in Eravur

A shop owner was seriously injured and another civilian injured when two unidentified persons riding a motorbike lobbed a grenade into a shop at Chenkalady junction, a high security zone area between Sri Lanka army garrison in Kommathurai and the Black Bridge checkpoint, 15 km. north of Batticaloa. Four shops located near the Chenkalady market were fully burnt by the fire caused by the grenade explosion. The attack took place around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, according to Eravur Police.

EPDP cadre shot dead in Batticaloa

Mr. Pankirajah George, 39, a cadre of the paramilitary group Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP), was shot and killed by an unidentified gunman riding a bicycle Tuesday night around 11:00 p.m., Batticaloa Police said. The incident took place 2 km. south of Batticaloa town, at Chinese Road in Puthur located close to the Valaiiravu airbase, within the High Security Zone of the Sri Lankan forces.

SLA bans transporting batteries, wires in Batticaloa

Sri Lakan Army (SLA) soldiers manning the check points between LTTE controlled and SLA held areas in the eastern districts of Batticaloa and Amparai imposed restrictions on transporting batteries, wires and electric devices from SLA held areas towards Vaharai and other LTTE held areas in the East since Saturday. Civilians were subjected to severe questioning and and body searcj by SLA, Special Task Force (STF) soldiers and the Police. Security is tightened in Batticaloa, Amparai districts, Police sources said.

SLA soldier shot and killed in Chenkalady

A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier, Lance Corporal Sumith Kumara, 25, was shot and killed by unidentified gunmen Saturday around 5:30 p.m. at Vantharumoolai Main Road, Police said. The soldier, attached to Kommanthurai Army Camp in Eravur, was deployed at duty in around 900 meters from the camp.

SLA escorted convoy with LTTE officials ambushed

0A convoy carrying Amparai Political Head of the Liberation Tigers, Mr. Kuyilinpan and other LTTE political staff, with Sri Lanka Army (SLA) escort facilitated by Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM), was attacked at Welikanda at 2.55 PM Sunday, Welikanda Police said. The bus carrying around 40 eastern LTTE officials from Kilinochchi to Batticaloa was ambushed with a land mine, but none were killed as the vehicle narrowly escaped the impact of the bomb. One LTTE official was injured in the attack. The ambush took place between two Sri Lankan military camps, at Boaththe, around 1 km from Welikanda SLA base. The convoy resumed its journey towards Batticaloa with high security, Police said.

Civilian killed in gunfire at Chenkalady market

0A 40 year old civilian, Mr. Thadchanamoorthy Karunamoorthy, was killed on the spot as Sri Lankan Army soldiers returned fire on gunmen who shot at an EPDP cadre Thursday morning around 10.30 AM, according to eyewitnesses in Chenkalady market. The EPDP cadre, Mr. Tharmaratnam Elamaran Ravi, 30, who was in-charge of the Chenkalady EPDP office, and an SLA corporal Mr. Piremathilake, 35, were wounded in the attack by the gunmen.
