Three SL security forces personnel killed in Jaffna attacks

SLA assaults Hindu priest after grenade attack

Unidentified persons lobbed a hand grenade on the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) unit patrolling along the Kaithady-Kopay road in Thenmaradchchy Jaffna, Friday morning around 10.30 a.m causing minor injuries to two SLA troopers, sources from Kaithady said. The SLA troopers arrested the Hindu priest at a nearby Hindu Temple during the cordon and search operation, and assaulted him severely before releasing him in the evening, sources added.

Private tutor shot dead at the Central Jaffna Bus stand

0An unidentified gunman shot dead Selvarasa Kirithas, 35, a displaced resident from Ilavalai, Wednesday morning around 8.45 a.m near Poobalasingham Book Depot at the Jaffna Central Bus stand, said police sources. The gunman, who shot Kirithas while he was drinking tea in front of a tea stall fled from the site in a blue color motorbike, civilians at the site said. The victim was a private tution teacher, the sources said.

Attempt to abduct SLA troopers in Jaffna

Sri Lanka security sources said two SLA troopers were seriously injured in an attack launched on their patrol team in Inuvil, a village located between Kankesanthurai and Jaffna, Thursday around 7 a.m. Unconfirmed reports said that there was firefight when unidentified attackers attempted to abduct the SLA troopers.

SLN to transfer fishermen to Colombo under PTA

Five fishermen who are being detained at the Kankesanthurai Police from Wednesday morning said in a statement to the Attorney at the Jaffna Human Rights Commission Mr M Remedius Thursday that soldiers of the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) forcefully arrested them while they were fishing in deep seas close to Mullaitivu about 30 km southeast of Point Pedro, civil society sources said. However, SLN officials said that the five detainees are to be handed over to the Colombo Terrorism Investigation Division under the Prevention of Terrorism Act for further investigation.

Jaffna fishermen protest against SLN attacks

A meeting between Northern Region Commander of Sri Lanka Army (SLA), Major General Chandrasiri and a delegation of civil society members held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Kankesanthurai command of the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) to explore solutions to hardships faced by fishermen in Jaffna district, ended inconclusively, sources in Jaffna said. Maj.Gen Chandrasiri told the civil society delegation that responses will be provided within two weeks after consultations with higher authorities in Colombo.

SLA violates detainees rights- HRC

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers in Jaffna has grossly violated the fundamental rights of arrested Tamil youths by sending them to the Terrorism Investigation Division (TID) in Colombo for interrogation without adhering to proper judicial procedures, said Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Jaffna Wednesday. In the past 45 days five Jaffna youths, presumed disappeared after arrests by the SLA, have been sent to the TID unit in Colombo, according to Jaffna Police.

Firefight in Mathakal sea

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) patrol boats and two unknown boats exchanged fire in Mathakal, Senthankulam seas west of Kankesanthurai Naval camp between 6.55 p.m. and 7.40 p.m., Friday, SLN sources said. The two boats were moving in a suspicious manner and when the SLN opened fire the boats returned fire, SLN sources added.

Three women members of Maaveerar family shot dead in Manipay

0Two young sisters, Bojan Renuka, 30, and Bojan Shanuka, 23, and their mother Bojan Arthanageswary, 51, residents of a house in Mudaliyar Kanagasabai Road in Manipay, close to the Manipay Hindu College, Jaffna district, were shot dead Sunday night at 11.45 p.m. by gunmen, suspected to be Sri Lanka Army (SLA) intelligence operatives and members of Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) paramilitary, who entered the house and sprayed bullets at the residents, sources said. The father, Nagendran Bojan, 55, and brother Bojan Ullasan, 26, sustained gunshot injuries and are receiving treatment at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, medical sources said.

SLN bans fishing east, west of KKS harbor

Sri Lanka Security Forces have banned fishing on seas east and west of Kankesanthurai Harbor High Security Zone (HSZ), stripping nearly six hundred fisher families from their livelihood, said K Thavaratnam, president of Jaffna District Consortium of Fisheries Unions. According to Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) officials the ban will be lifted only when violents incidents subside and Jaffna district returns to normalcy, Mr Thavaratnam further said.

SLN soldiers assault Polikandi fishermen

Mr.Iruthayarajah Jesuthas (28) and Mr.Arulprahasam Anton (34), fishermen of Polykandi Friday afternoon complained to fisheries officials that they were severely assaulted by the soldiers of the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) when they were fishing in Myliathanai Sea along the coast of Kankesanthurai in Vadamaradchchi division in Jaffna district, sources said.
