Auto-rickshaw driver shot dead in Thenmaradchi

Armed men in a motorbike shot and killed a young auto-rickshaw driver in Kodikamam in Thenmaradchi division, Jaffna, Tuesday around 10:30 a.m. The victim, Selvaratnam Mathiseelan, 22, is the 8th auto driver to be gunned down in Jaffna.

Maaveerar family member shot dead in Varani

In the escalating incidents of killings in Thenmaradchy area, a student from Varani Yakkalai area was shot dead by unknown gunmen at 2.30 p.m. Tuesday. Sources from Varany said the student was a member of a Maaveerar family. His brother, a member of Liberation Tigers, had died in combat earlier.

Navaratnarajah Jegatheeswaran, 26, from Rajakiramam in Karaveddy, Jaffna was shot dead at 8.30 a.m. Sunday by unknown gunmen riding in a motorbike along Nelliady-Kodikamam road, sources from Jaffna said. Jagatheeswaran was formerly a member of the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) and left the organization some time ago, Karaveddy residents said.

An explosion was heard in the area, followed by several gunshots, according to residents in the area. The SLA camp is located on the Kodikamam – Pt.Pedro road, between Varani market and Varani Maha Vidyalayam.

Relatives identified another body as belonging to Balasingham Santhirakanthan (24) who owns a motorbike repairshop in Kottadi Jaffna.

Police returned fire from their positions inside the Police station premises and the firefight lasted for more than 15 minutes, according to sources. No injuries were reported.

In another similar attack one SLA soldier was injured when unidentified persons lobbed a grenade at the army sentry point located at Ramavil area between Kodikamam and Puttur in Jaffna district, sources in Jaffna said.

Security forces cordon, search Potpathi Road area

SLA arrested a youth who was involved in brokering motor bike sales. Youth is still in custody, according to reports.

Policeman injured in Point Pedro attack

Unknown assailant waiting outside the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) offices in Manthikai, 2 km south of Point Pedro, fired at two persons in civilian clothes when they came out of the office premises at 10.50 a.m. Friday. Unconfirmed reports said that one Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier dressed in civilian clothes was killed in the attack. Palaly military spokesman denied that the dead man was an SLA trooper. The other, a Sri Lanka Police officer, was injured in the attack and has been admitted to the Base Hospital in Point Pedro. He receiving treatment for gunshot injuries amid strengthened security.

Body recovered from Varany Temple well

Partially clothed body of a man around 40 years old was found in a well at the premises of Chuttipuram Amman Kovil in Varani, Jaffna along the Kodikamam-Point Pedro road, sources in Jaffna said. The yet unidentified body was recovered by Kodikamam Police and has been transferred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for postmortem examinations.

Grenade attack on SLA vehicle in Mirusuvil

Two unknown assailants who followed a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) truck in a motorbike hurled a hand grenade into the vehicle near Mirusuvil junction in Thenmaradchy, Jaffna district Sunday 6.30 pm. Unconfirmed reports said the explosion injured atleast two SLA soldiers riding in the vehicle. The Palaly SLA command has not reported on the incident.
