Indian Naval Personnel to Mullaiththeevu: Thirumavalavan lambasts New Delhi

ThirumaavalavanThirumavalavan, a Tamil nationalist leader and the president of Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) in Tamil Nadu, on Monday condemned the Indian Government for "betraying the entire Tamil people" by sending civil clothed Indian naval personnel to Mullaiththeevu through the Chennai international airport. Addressing the media in Chennai, he said that New Delhi was "totally responsible" for the "ruthless genocide" of Tamils in Sri Lanka. "Even the future generations of Tamils will never forgive the Indian Government for disrespecting the sentiments of 100 million Tamil people," he warned.

Eastern University students clash with police during protest fast

Eastern University students observing a protest fast in the university campus Thursday around 9:00 a.m. against the detention of two fellow students, raised strong objections when two Sri Lanka Intelligence officials who had come with the police tried to video film the protesters, sources in Batticaloa said. When the students tried to expel the two officials, police who had accompanied them opened fire on the ground, the protesting students said. The police, however, claimed that one of their men’s gun had accidently gone off.

Grenade attack on Vaazhaichcheanai TMVP local council member

Unidentified persons lobbed a hand grenade Saturday around 7:15 p.m on the house of Thamotharam Jeevathas, Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) member of Vaazhaichcheanai Piratheasa Chapai (Pradeshiya Sabah), in Ea'raavoor police division in Batticaloa district. No one was hurt but the front portion of the house was damaged, sources in Batticaloa said.

Rights watchdog faults Colombo for deteriorating human rights situation in East

"Killings and abductions are rife and there is total impunity for horrific abuses," in the eastern province, which the Sri Lankan government claims to have 'liberated' as an example of democracy in action, said the New York based Human Rights Watch (HRW). There have been at least 30 extra-judicial killings and 30 abductions in Eastern Province within the last 60 days, the HRW said blaming the Sri Lankan government for providing unqualified support to TMVP paramilitary factions. The attacks and other threats against journalists have caused the media to curtail reporting on the security situation in the East. Members of civil society organizations have also been subjected to threats, according to the HRW.

CPI-led All Party Meeting calls for state-wide protest in Tamil Nadu

Therefore, a second APM was convened on Monday by the initiative of the Communist Party of India (CPI), Tamil Nadu, chaired by its State Secretary D. Pandian, who announced a state-wide peaceful protest on November 25 to demonstrate to New Delhi on the resolve of the Tamil Nadu people for a single resolution: Immediate Ceasefire in Sri Lanka.

Unidentified armed men lying in ambush shot and killed two Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) Karuna faction men riding on a motorcycle along Chiththaa'ndi Murukan Koayil Veethi, Wednesday around 5:00 a.m, in Ea'raavoor police division in Batticaloa district. The killers escaped from the site located 500 m from Murakkoddaancheanai Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp.

TMVP informer shot dead in Batticaloa

US Ambassador says 'honoured' to meet paramilitary leader

US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, Robert O' Blake says he was honoured to meet the leader of the Army-backed paramilitary group TMVP (Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal) which Human Rights Watch has condemend for widespread human rights abuses in the eastern province - of which Pillayan was appointed chief minister. Mr. Blake said he is "pleased that [Pillayan] assured me he too is committed to demobilizing the paramilitaries" the Sunday Times reported. The same column in the paper reported that TMVP cadres are once again being used to support the Sri Lankan security forces' counter-insurgency in the east.
