GS shot dead in Thonadamanaru

A 'Grama Sevaka' (village level administration officer) was shot dead by unidentified gunmen at his office located in front of the historic Sellasannithi Murugan Temple in Thonadamanaru, around 4:30 p.m., Friday, police said. Four village level officers have been shot dead in Jaffna during the past 6 months.

Fishmonger shot dead in Valvettithurai

Unidentified armed men waylaid a fishmonger behind Valvettithurai hospital in Vadamaradchi and shot him dead, Thursday around 8:30 a.m. The victim's dead body, recovered by Valvettithurari police, was transferred to the Valvettithurai government hospital, the police said.

Four grenade attacks on SLA troopers in Vadamaradchi

Four hand grenade attacks were targetted towards Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers at four different places in Vadamaradchi Monday, sources in Point Pedro said. No SLA soldiers were injured in the attacks. However, SLA sources said that in one of the attacks at Alayady are in Polikandy, a member of the Liberation Tigers was killed.

SLN cancels ship transport, clashes erupt in the seas off Nagarkovil

Unidentified persons lobbed a hand grenade Tuesday around 7:30 p.m on the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) sentry post located near Arasady junction in Nallur, Jaffna, and in a separate incident Wednesday unidentified armed men opened fire on the SLA camp near Udupiddy junction in Vadamaradchi at 6:00 p.m, sources in Jaffna said. Information on SLA injuries are not available.

In three other separate incidents in Jaffna three civilians were seriously injured in gunfire and knife attacks by unknown gunmen. Three youths were also reported missing in Kulappitty junction after being questioned by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers.

Body identified as belonging to Karaveddy youth

The body of a youth recovered Wednesday evening at Vallaiveli along the Valvai-Thondaimanaru road by Valvetithurai police, was identified as belonging to their son by parents from Karaveddy Thursday, Valvetithurai hospital sources said. The youth was abducted forcefully by armed men in a white van Tuesday on Nelliady road while he was riding his bicycle, his parents said.

Body with stab wounds found in Mirusuvil

The body of a family man with stab wounds was found inside his house at Mirusuvil north, in an area close to the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Front Defence Line (FDL) in Thenmaradchi north, by Kodikamam Police on information given by the dead man's neighbours. SLA allows limited fishing in Jaffna lagoon

Following talks held Saturday between the representatives of Fishermen Societies in Pasaiyoor, Gurunagar, Colombuthurai and officials of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna, limited fishing was allowed in Jaffna lagoon providing a measured relief to fisher families affected by the four month old fishing ban, fisheries society sources said. The relaxation did not apply to Vadamaradchi north, east and many of the islets.

Villages that have remained gripped with fear due to forced disappearances and killings for many weeks, were decorated with red and yellow flags, and youths wearing tiger-striped uniforms were seen in many places in Vadamaradchy, residents said. Meanwhile, SLA soldiers in Jaffna town and the surroundings of University of Jaffna and Parameswara Junction on Palay Road conducted search operations.

Unidentified persons triggered a claymore device Tuesday around 4:00 p.m at Gnaniyar Valavu area in Varani Thenmaradchi, killing one Sri Lanka Army (SLA) trooper and injuring three of the SLA road patrol unit on its way to Apoothy SLA camp from the 52nd SLA Division, military officials said. The claymore device was attached to a bicycle left along the road on the deserted boundary area between Vadamaradchi and Thenmaradchi of the Jaffna peninsula.
