Muslim federation calls for hartal, urges Tamil-Muslim unity in Batticaloa

Federation of Muslim Mosques in Batticaloa district appealed Monday to the residents in Muslim areas in Batticaloa district to join in a shut down Tuesday, demanding the immediate release of a Muslim trader abducted Wednesday in Chiththaandi area, allegedly by a Tamil paramilitary group. The Federation has also released a hand-bill titled, 'Let us safeguard Tamil-Muslim ties,' sources in Batticaloa said.

Thamilchelvan killed in SLAF air attack

S.P. Thamilchelvan, Liberation Tigers Political Head was killed in Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) aerial bombardment Friday morning in Ki'linochchi. The Head Quarters of the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) in a press communique said it was conveying the loss of Brigadier Thamilchelvan with profound sadness to the people of Tamil Eelam, the Tamil Diaspora and the Global Community. The Sri Lanka Air Force attack has specifically targeted the residence of the members of the Political Division.

Corpse of Tamil youth recovered in Kaaththaankudi

Kaththaankudi police recovered the body of a Tamil youth in decomposed state Thursday around 7:00 a.m, washed ashore on the beach in front of a mosque in Kaaththaankudi, on information given by residents around 6:00 a.m Thursday. Assault injuries are found on the head and other parts of the body which has been handed over to Batticaloa Teaching hospital for postmortem examinations, the police said.

Paramilitary men who knocked the doors of a 55-year-old farmer (Poadiyaar) in Vanthaa'rumoolai, shot him dead Friday early morning around 1:10. The victim, Kannaayiram Peethamparam, a father of three, was shot in his chest and hands with 7.62 mm rounds that are used in T-56 assault rifles, according to the Police. Vanthaa'rumoolai is located 17 km northwest of Batticaloa city.

Heavy artillery streaked from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) controlled Mannaar into Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) controlled Maanthai West Monday morning, following a SLA ground operation in Mannaar Vavuniyaa border Sunday evening. The artillery barrage by SLA began to shake the city at 5:30 a.m. The SLA has notified the two hospitals, Mannaar general hospital and Murungkan district hospital, to be put on high alert. Telephone links to LTTE controlled Maanthai West have been cut off.
