SLA trooper wounded in Vavuniya grenade attack

A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) trooper was seriously injured in a grenade attack by unknown assailants at the sentry in front of Vavuniya Madhya Maha Vidiyalayam at 7:55 p.m. Sunday, Police sources in Vavuniya said. The injured soldier was first admitted to Vavuniya Teaching Hospital and later transported to the Sri Lanka Military Hospital for emergency surgery.

Four SLA troops injured in grenade attacks in Jaffna

Four Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers were injured in two separate attacks in Jaffna peninsula, Saturday evening. Three Soldiers were injured in a grenade attack in Kodikamam town, around 7:30 p.m.. Another soldier was injured by sniper fire near SLA's Forward Defence Line (FDL) near Muhamalai, military sources said.

Elilan, in an urgent letter to the Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Major General Ulf Henricsson Saturday evening said that artillery attacks by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and air strikes by the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) in the Liberation Tigers controlled territories in the Northeast, tantamounted to Declaration of War by the Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) against the LTTE. "It is now appropriate for the SLMM to declare publicly that the ceasefire agreement is not holding anymore on the ground," Mr. Elilan told media.

8 LTTE members killed, 4 wounded in SLAF bombing

Eight Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) members, 2 offiicals and 6 cadres, were killed and four wounded when Sri Lanka Air Force bombed Liberation Tigers' Thenaham Conference Centre in Karadiyanaru, 24 kilometers northwest of Batticaloa. SLAF bombers attacked the LTTE run Thenaham between 11:30 and 12:00 Saturday. Batticaloa Head of Tamileelam War Hero's Affairs, Thamilchelvan mama and Batticaloa Coordinator of Village Development Scheme Ariharan were among the dead, according to LTTE Batticaloa Political Head Daya Mohan. Kfir jets dropped 12 bombs in three rounds, destroying the Conference Centre.

Ulf Henricsson, Head of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) and villagers of LTTE held Eachchilampathu Vaharai division at Kallady LTTE political office ended abruptly following aerial strike on civilian targets in the area by Sri Lanka Air Force. Buildings of the Verugal Muhathuwaram Government Tamil School were damaged and two Tamil civilians were injured when Kifir jets dropped bombs on the area located about 750 meters away from the Kallady LTTE political office where the SLMM head had discussion with representatives of the villagers.

SLA refuses permission for JHU parliamentarians to go to Mavilaru

Venerable Athureliya Ratana Thera, parliamentary group leader of the all monks' party, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) along with a fellow parliamentarian Venerable Akmeemana Dayaratna Thera began a hunger strike at Kallaru junction on Allai-Kantalai road Friday morning around 9.30 a.m. when the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) refused permission for them to go to the controversial Mavilaru area to reopen the closed sluice gate. About a hundred Sinhalese civilians with two more Buddhist months have also joined the fasting, civil sources said.

Finland to withdraw truce monitors from Sri Lanka

Finland has decided to withdraw it's members of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) from Sri Lanka. The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), recently reiterated their stand that the formal process of ceasefire monitoring required a scrupulous commitment to neutrality in Sri Lanka's conflict, which was compromised by the EU ban and responded to Norway's initial request of 6 months to replace monitors within a shorter time frame, and later extended the time frame for two months, till September 01. The Norwegian Special Envoy Jon-Hanssen Bauer is sheduled to visit Sri Lanka to discuss the process forward.

Three-wheeler explodes at LTTE FDL in Batticaloa, 2 killed

Two persons who were travelling in a three-wheeler from the SLA controlled territory were killed when explosives in their vehicle exploded at the gateway of the LTTE held Monkeykattu area in Vavunathivu in Batticaloa district, Friday noon. The three- wheeler was destroyed in the explosion, LTTE officials in Batticaloa said. The victims were suspected be persons who were abducted by the Sri Lankan troopers and their paramilitaries as a person left the three-wheeler towards SLA FDL seconds before the three-wheeler exploded.

Elilan said. Three civilians were also wounded in the attack, according to Mr. Elilan.
