TRO staffer recounts Army torture

The statement by Kanthasami Sivasuthan, a Tamil Rehabilitation Organisation (TRO) staffer in Kalvayal, Chavakachcheri who was arrested and tortured by Sri Lanka Army was released to the press Saturday. Kanthasami, Technical officer of NECORD project, was beaten and threatened by Sri Lanka Army Intelligence on 18 and 20 July.

A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was killed and 3 seriously wounded in a Claymore mine explosion that took place at Meesalai, 4 km northeast of Chavakacheri in Thenmaradchi sector of Jaffna district around 8:30 a.m. Saturday. Traffic through A9 at Messalai was blocked and a cordon and search operation was launched by the SLA troopers.

Man killed in SLA gunfire after grenade attack in Gurunagar

A man believed to be a local resident was killed when Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers opened fire indiscriminately after two unknown assailants hurled a hand grenade into the SLA sentry located near St.Patricks College junction in Gurunagar Jaffna at 8:15 p.m. Thursday, sources in Jaffna said. The body is lying 50 meters from the sentry point and has not been identified. The alleged assailants escaped after throwing the grenade, according to sources.

Constitutional safeguards proved inadequate – High Commissioner

0Britain’s trust in the safeguards built into the constitution of Ceylon at independence was misplaced and their weakness is to blame for the island’s present problems, the British High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, Mr. Dominic John Chilcott, said in an interview with the Sunday Virakesari. In a wide-ranging interview last weekend, Mr. Chilcott said that LTTE and the Sri Lanka government must now negotiate an end to the conflict. The UK and the United States were in agreement on their policies on Sri Lanka, he also said, adding that India also wants a negotiated solution to the conflict.

SLA soldiers gun down MPCS branch manager in Mannar

The Manager of Manthai South Multi-Purpose Co-operative Society (MPCS) branch in Uyilankulam, was gunned down by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers at Manatkulam Junction, 14 km southeast of Mannar town, while he was returning home. Police said that the MPCS manager was hit when SLA troopers opened fire after a grenade attack on the checkpost. The incident took place around 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

TRO officer assaulted by SLA troops in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers severly assaulted a Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) officer at Varani, northeast of Jaffna twon, Thursday, TRO officials said. The TRO field-officer was blind-folded, taken inside an army bunker located within the premises of a SLA mini-camp at Thaavalai Iyatalai area, and was assaulted, according to a complaint made by the TRO's District Office with the Human Rights Commission in the northern peninsula.

Karunaratne was captured by the Liberation Tigers during a clandestine cross border incursion of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) into LTTE held territory on early morrning of 14 July.

Judge reprimands Allaipiddy Investigations Officer

Claymore mine hits SLA convoy, 3 killed, 11 wounded

A Sri Lanka Army Captain, a Lieutenant and a Lance Corporal were killed and 11 other troopers wounded when a bus carrying the troopers was ambushed with a Claymore mine near Maruthanarmadam Junction, 8.5 km northeast of Jaffna town at 11:05 a.m. Wednesday. Five of the eleven SLA troopers wounded in the ambush, were in serious condition, SLA sources said. The soldiers opened fire indiscriminately for fifteen minutes and beat up the civilians in the area after the attack. Three civilians were rushed to Jaffna hospital, residents said.

Eight injured as roadside bomb explodes in Anpuvallipuram

A saloon owner standing outside his business was killed in blast shock and four Sri Lanka Army soldiers (SLA) were injured when their tractor was hit by a road side Claymore mine at Kodikamam in the Thenmaradchi sector of the Jaffna peninsula, around 9:00 a.m., Tuesday. Two SLA soldiers and a 70-years old civilian who was inside the saloon, were seriously wounded. A saloon worker was also wounded.

Muttur east schools to conduct special session for IDP students

Classes for internally displaced students in Muttur east would be held in schools in the afternoon after the first session for students of the area in the morning. This decision has been taken at a discussion held in Ilankaithurai Muhathuwaram School in Eachchilampathu division Monday morning. Principals and teachers of schools now functioning in Eachchilampathu division participated in the discussion. The objective of the discussion was to provide uninterrupted education to internally displaced students from Muttur east coastal villages following continuous artillery fire by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), sources said.
