Uyilankulam murder suspects further remanded

Anuradhapura Magistrate Mr.Harsha Seirusinghe Friday forwarded a report of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Police to the Mannar Magistrate that more bodies of persons could be buried in a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Camp, which is located in Uyilankulam in Mannar district, legal sources said.

Vavuniya residents raise stink over undisposed garbage

0Residents and businesses in Vavuniya have been raising a stink over the smell of undisposed garbage accumulating for the last several days as Vavuniya Urban Council (UC) searched for an alternate site to dump the municipal district garbage, civil sources in Vavuniya said. Villagers from Rasendrakulam located 4km south of Vavuniya where the landfill is located had prevented the UC from dumping garbage in their village saying that large amount of garbage near residential area is polluting the environment.

Detained Indian fishermen threaten hunger strike

Mannar Magistrate Mr.M.N.M.Abdulla Tuesday ordered further remand for five Indian fishermen who were arrested by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) when poaching in the seas off Thalaimannar. The suspects told civil officials present in court that they would go on hunger strike if they are not sent back to India.

Easing residency rules will affect Mannar born students, UGC told

Over 3000 graduates take part in job training

Police massed up in Mannar for Victor's Day

Hundreds of people marched through Mannar town Tuesday evening for the remembrance day of senior Liberation Tigers commander Victor (Mr. Marcelin Fuselus). More than two thousand policemen were massed up in the town during the remembrance march and the meeting that followed on the Mannar public grounds. A large number of Police were brought from outside Mannar district to beef up deployments in the town Tuesday, residents said.

Mannar Police arrest four for building LTTE memorial

Sri Lanka Police Thursday night arrested four workers who were constructing a memorial in Mannar town for 'Victor'(Mr.Marcelin Fuselus), a senior commander of the Liberation Tigers who was killed in battle with the Sri Lanka army in 1986. The masons and their assistants were arrested when they were starting work on the memorial at the roundabout in Bazaar Street in the heart of Mannar town around 7.30 p.m. Sri Lanka army and Police stepped up patrols and deployed more troops in the town following the arrest.

Grenade, ammo found in Mannar school

A hand grenade and eighteen rounds of live ammunition were found in a plastic container by the compound wall of a school in Mannar town Wednesday evening, Police said. The grenade was exploded by a bomb disposal squad from the Sri Lanka army camp in Thallady around seven p.m.

Mannar magistrate Tuesday remanded five Indian boatmen for entering Sri Lankan waters. He directed Thalaimannar Police to hand over fifteen Indian fishermen who were arrested along with the five boatmen to Sri Lanka navy for repatriation. Sri Lanka Navy seized seven Indian fishing boats that were poaching in Sri Lankan waters north of Thalaimannar Monday afternoon around 4.Twenty eight fishermen were taken into custody and were brought ashore by SLN.

Meanwhile, Police said that a parcel containing two kilograms of heroin worth 6 million rupees was disovered by the roadside Saturday near the place where the man from Karisal was shot dead.

Some anti-social elements here that are opposed to our campaign to rid of Mannar of drugs want to attack us and hinder us. They are using religion to divide the community so that they can continue their nefarious activities without any hindrance. We will not rise to the communal bait. Mannar, as you know, has become a major transit point for drugs. We want to stop this”, said Mr. S. Iniyavan, head of the LTTE's political division for Mannar, speaking to TamilNet Monday.
