Two civilians killed in SLA ambush

Two civilians who were returning from a temple festival south west of Batticaloa Wednesday were shot dead by the Sri Lanka army. Velmurugu Charles Satkunam of Kaluwanchikudi and Ilyathamby Arumugam the 40th Colony were returning from the annual festival of the Thaanthamalai Murugan temple in the interior in the early hours of the morning today around 3.30 a.m. when they were shot dead by an SLA ambush party at Vaalakkaalai near the 39th Colony on the Ampara-Batticaloa district border sources said.

Search operation in Batticaloa

At least 25 persons were arrested during a search operation by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers in the Thaandavanveli area in the Batticaloa town around 6 p.m. this evening, residents said. Security sources said the arrested are being interrogated at the Batticaloa police station.

Tigers train guns beyond harbour

Artillery shells fired by the Liberation Tigers hit coastal areas to the west of Kankesanthurai (KKS), Sri Lanka army's only harbour in Jaffna, yesterday sources contacted by phone in the northern peninsula said Sunday. The shelling indicates that the LTTE has moved its field guns closer to the sprawling military base complex in Palaly and Kankesanthurai the sources said.

SLA builds bulwark as Tigers advance

The Operational headquarters of Sri Lanka's Ministry of Defence (MoD) acknowledged that the Sri Lanka army was pushed out of Pallai, Pulopalai and Iththaavil by the Liberation Tigers yesterday in a press release issued Monday afternoon. The SLA, according to the release, was forced to withdraw with heavy casualties. Sources in Jaffna, meanwhile, said that the SLA is constructing a massive bulwark to stall the advancing Tigers.

Battles rage for MSR

The Voice of Tigers said in its morning news broadcast today that Tiger troops on the A9 highway north of the Elephant Pass garrison repulsed an operation by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) yesterday to retake the sector of the road held by them now. The radio said that more than twenty SLA troops were killed in the fighting and that the Tigers had recovered weapons and equipment from the scene of the battle.

MSR remains breached

The Main Supply Route (MSR) on the A9 highway (Kandy Road) to the Sri Lanka army (SLA) base complexes in Elephant Pass and Iyakkachchi remains cut off between Eluthumaddvaal and Pallai sources in Jaffna said. The Uthayan, the Tamil daily published in Jaffna, quoting Sri Lankan military sources, said that the army is continuing its attempt to bridge the gap in the MSR, breached and held by the Liberation Tigers from early Monday.

Panicked soldiers shoot couple

A couple who were returning home from the Jaffna hospital with their new born child in an auto rickshaw were killed when the vehicle was hit by SLA fire at Iththaavil, 3 k.m north of Pallai around 2.30 p.m. today. The driver of the auto rickshaw was also killed on the spot.

Creeping advantage in Jaffna

SLA tractor smashes shop

Four women selling vegetables were injured when a Sri Lanka Army tractor speeding through the market area in Valaichenai went off the road around 12.15 p.m. Thursday, said eyewitnesses. The SLA soldiers who were riding on the tractor fired into the air to disperse crowd that had surrounded the vehcicle, they said.
