SLA soldiers guard police stations in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army has decided to provide security to all police stations in the Jaffna district with immediate effect. Twenty soldiers are deployed in the premises of each police station. The Police has suspended traffic duty in major towns in the Jaffna district and also stopped investigating complaints in regard to minor offences, police sources in Jaffna said.

IGP visits Jaffna, briefs police officials

Sri Lanka's Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mr.Chandra Fernando Saturday paid an official visit to Jaffna and held discussion with officers-in-charge of all police stations in the district. The discussion was held at the office of Police Headquarters at Kankesanthurai, which is located in the high security zone, police sources said.

SLA to construct new access road to Tellipallai hospital

Mr.Tyronne Fernando, North East Governor Saturday declared open the renovated Tellipalai District Hospital and commissioned the newly installed Cobalt Cancer Treatment Plant in the cancer unit of the hospital. Meanwhile, a decision was taken at a conference held in Sri Lanka Army Jaffna headquarters in Palaly and attended by the Mr.Tyronne Fernando and Major General Sunil Tennekoon, Jaffna SLA commander, to open a new access road to the Cancer Treatment Unit enabling the patients and employees to have easy access to the hospital, sources said.

Jaffna Cancer unit to reopen after 15 years

0The renovated Tellipalai District Hospital at a cost of about 90 million rupees and the Cancer Treatment Unit at a cost of 55 million rupees are to be commissioned by the North East Provincial Governor Mr.Tyronne Fernando on Saturday morning after a lapse of fifteen years. North East Provincial Ministry of Health has organized the opening event, sources said.

Jaffna Islets' ferry service to use Indian boats

Four of the fifty-two Indian fishing boats seized by the Jaffna High Court for poaching in the northern territorial waters are to be used for transporting passengers between islets of the Jaffna district. A team of engineers of the Ministry of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources recently visited Jaffna to finalise arrangement in this regard, Jaffna Fisheries Department official Mr.T. Tharmalingam said.

Jaffna roads to be widened

Missing fishermen found in SLN custody

Fishermen, Mr.Sivaraj Pirabu (24) and Mr.Joseph Iruthayathas (38), who went missing after going out fishing in Kankesanturai (KKS) sea were found in the custody of Sri Lanka Navy (SLN), civil sources said. The SLN said the fishermen were arrested for straying into the high security zone (HSZ) in Kankesanthurai Sea.

Woman identifies SLA soldier in attempted rape case

Restrictions hinder revival of Jaffna fishing

President of Fishermen Association, Valigamam North, Mr Pius Logathas, talking to TamilNet on the predicament of displaced fisher families of his district said that for the families to rebuild their lives, the Sri Lanka Government, in addition to providing compensation to buy boats, nets and other tools of trade, should also stop harassment by the Security Forces, remove restrictions on fishing time and allow deep sea fishing.

Sri Lanka to sign USD 150 million arms deal with Iran

Sri Lanka is to buy over USD 150 million of arms from Iran, the Sunday Times reported this week. A high-powered Sri Lankan military delegation led by Army Commander Lt. Gen. Shantha Kottegoda has left for Tehran this week to conclude the deal which was outlined when President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga went to Iran in November last year, the paper said.

Missing VVT fisherman's body washed ashore

Explosives recovered from fishermen sent to Govt Analyst

Indian fishermen arrested near KKS harbour area remanded

Dutch asked to delay funding KKS harbour development

Jaffna Government Agent, S.Pathmanathan, told an official of the Dutch Government visiting Jaffna Thursday, to delay funding development of the Kankesanthurai harbour until permanent peace prevails in the district, local daily Uthayan reported. The Government of Netherland has earlier allocated funds towards renovation of the harbor and the visit of the official was to collect additional information related to harbour development.

Jaffna IDPs oppose move to reduce relief

VVT fishermen complain of harassment by Navy
