SLA soldier dies in friendly fire in Thenmaradchchi

Chavakachcheri Magistrate Mr.A.Premshankar Friday ordered remand for Private Harinda Jayalath of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) till September 16 in connection with the killing of a fellow soldier Rozan Gunaratne (24) Thursday morning around 11.55 a.m. at the army checkpoint along Maruthankulam Road in Eluthumaduval area of the Thenmaradchchi forward defense line in Jaffna district, legal sources said.

Disappeared youth in SLA custody, parents complain

Karunakaran Sasikaran (16) of Allarai Kodikamam in Thenmaradchchi division in Jaffna district who is alleged to have been taken into custody by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers in Muhamalai checkpoint recently when he was crossing to enter Wanni has not been released yet, according to complaints lodged by the parents of the boy with the Jaffna regional office of the Human Rights Commission of Sri Lanka (HRCSL) and the Jaffna office of the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) Monday, civil sources said.

SLA soldiers attacked in Mirusuvil

More civilians, SLA troubles erupt in Jaffna

0Restive crowds pelted Sri Lanka army (SLA) troops and blocked the Nelliyadi-Kodikamam main road with burning tires at Kalikai Junction, Thunnalai in Jaffna demanding the arrest of an SLA soldier who had allegedly attempted to molest a married woman in the area in the early hours of Friday morning. Crowds dispersed only after Police promised to bring the alleged offender to book. Later in the day, crowds tried to set fire to an SLA vehicle that knocked and wounded a man in Chavakachcheri town. The crowds also set fire to a Sri Lanka army sentry in Chavakachcheri town during the stand off that developed after the incident.

Kodikamam Police force entry, search LTTE office

Jaffna, Vavuniya shut down in hartal, protesters clash with SLA

The entire districts of Jaffna and Vavuniya Saturday came to a standstill following a general shut down, condemning the killings of Mr.Kousalyan, LTTE political head for Batticaloa Amparai district, his colleagues and Mr.Chandra Nehru, former Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian for Amparai district. In several areas civilians blocked roads and burnt tyres. Clashes took place at the junctions of Puttur and Kaithady in Thenmaradchchi division in Jaffna district Saturday afternoon between groups of civilians and soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army when the latter attempted to remove the roadblocks. Soldiers fled from their sentry points when the angered civilians threw stones at them.

Protestors carried placards and shouted slogans holding hands along the A 9 Jaffna-Kandy road from Kodikamam to Kaithady, sources said.
