Nallur Murugan Temple annual festival begins

The twenty-five day annual festival of the historic Nallur Kandasamy Temple in Jaffna began 30 July Sunday 10:30 a.m. with the Sacred Flag hoisting ceremony (Kodi Etram). The Sacred Flag for the ceremony was brought to the temple premises from Gurunathar temple located close to the Sattanathar temple Saturday morning in a procession of devotees.

Claymore attack in Nallur, 2 policemen killed, 5 wounded

A Claymore attack on a Sri Lankan police vehicle has claimed the lives of two policemen near Chetty Street-Navalar road junction in Nallur, Jaffna around 2:00 p.m. Wednesday. The attack has taken place in a highly guarded area surrounded by Sri Lanka Army camps and checkposts near Kaylasapillayar Temple, Narikkundu and Muthirai Junction, Jaffna Police said. Five policemen, wounded in the attack, were rushed to Jaffna Hospital.

EPDP supporter shot dead in Jaffna islet

Owner of a welding plant in Vankalavadi, Velanai in Jaffna islets was shot dead at 1:35 p.m. by two unknown gunmen who arrived in a motorbike at the garage. C. Yogeswaran, 55, who is alleged to be a supporter of Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) is from Nayanmarkattu area in Nallur, local residents said.

SLA hinders school rehabilitation work in Jaffna

Trader shot dead in Neervely, Jaffna

Unidentified gunmen shot and killed L. Yasotharan, 35, a trader in front of his shop located in Neervely on the Jaffna-Point Pedro road, Friday evening around 5.00 p.m, said sources from Jaffna. Yasotharan, seriously injured was immediately rushed to Jaffna Teaching hospital but later succumbed to his gunshot wounds at the hospital, hospital sources said.

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers shot and killed two youths riding in a motorbike at Aadiyapatham junction, around 12:20 p.m. Friday. SLA sources in Jaffna claimed that their troopers shot at attackers who were fleeing after firing on a Police post. However, eyewitnesses said that the soldiers stationed at the junction aimed at the motorbike approaching the juntion. The nearest police post is 400 meters away from the Adiyapatham junction.

Claymore attack on SLA vehicle in Jaffna, policeman wounded

Unidentified attackers exploded a Claymore mine targeting a Sri Lanka Army vehicle on Nallur Temple Road in Jaffna Wednesday afternoon. A policeman was wounded, SLA sources said. The SLA troopers opened fire and cordoned off the area for search operation. The Claymore mine was attached to a bicycle that was parked along the road, SLA officials said.

Displaced Muttur east families languish in shelters

Tamil families displaced from their houses in the Liberation Tigers held Muttur east in the Trincomalee district following Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), Army (SLA) and Navy (SLN) attacks on April 24 have not returned to their villages through fear, civil society sources said. The displaced families are still staying in temporary shelters and Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO) and other local social organizations in the area are providing their day-to-day livelihood assistance, sources said.

Jaffna ice-cream vendor injured by gunfire

S. Kajendran, 25, an ice-cream seller was seriously injured when gunmen fired at the van he was travelling in at the Natchimar Kovil area in Jaffna-KKS road at 7 p.m. Sunday, sources said. The driver and his front-seat passenger said that the gunfire was from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers who were stationed near the junction.

FAO provides assistance to Muttur East families

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) provided livelihood assistance to forty seven families affected by the two decades of war in Nallur, a village located in the Liberation Tigers held territory in the Muttur east in Trincomalee district, civil society sources said. Under a self-generating income project in collaboration with a local partner organization, families received livestock for home breeding, sources said.
