Police compound fishermen's woes in Vankalai

“Many foreign NGOs [Non-Governmental Organizations] are claiming in international forums that they are engaged in development work in the North-East, but the reality on the ground is that no development of benefit to the people has been completed,” said Mr. S. K. Thooyavan, the director of the Liberation Tigers’ development secretariat, speaking at a conference at the Jaffna district secretariat Tuesday, according to Uthayan, the Jaffna-based Tamil daily.

UNHCR IG calls for renewed focus on Sri Lanka's IDPs

New surgical unit commissioned in Trinco general hospital

This was the first time in the northeast province a hospital that comes under the provincial ministry of health was provided with such facility, provincial health officials said.

NECORD to revive rural bank system in northeast

Thousands from Vanni vote in Omanthai, Uyilankulam, Madhu

0Thousands of enthusiastic voters from the Mullaithivu district and the northern parts of the Vavuniya district which are controlled by the Liberation Tigers swarmed to polling stations in Omanthai Friday morning to cast their ballots. More than thirty percent of the fifty two thousand voters in Mullaithivu had cast their votes by 10 a.m. according to the chief returning officer for the district, Ms. Imelda Sukumar. Omanthai, a dilapidated town surrounded by Sri Lankan military garrisons is eighteen kilometres north of Vavuniya town.

Pre-school Committees to be elected in the North-East

GA briefs officials on Vanni voting arrangements

Essential facilities, including transport, have been arranged for the voters in the Liberation Tigers controlled areas of Vavuniya, Mannar and Mullaithivu to vote in clustered polling stations in the areas controlled by the Sri Lanka Army, and the Omanthai check point will stay open starting at 4:00 am on election day, April 2, until all the voters can return to their homes in the LTTE-controlled areas, said the Returning Officer and Government Agent for Vavuniya, Mr. K. Ganesh, at a special meeting Saturday.

6151 NorthEast children suffer without psychiatric help

Japan donates ambulances to NE hospitals

UNICEF to donate ambulances to NorthEast

More Australian Funding for Land Mine Action in Sri Lanka

Refugee women seek asylum in LTTE office

0Twelve women from refugee camps India sought asylum at the political office of the Liberation Tigers in Vavuniya Saturday. The women said they had forcibly been kept in safe houses in Colombo by men who had promised to get them jobs abroad. People chased away a gang that tried to abduct the women when they arrived in Vavuniya by train on Saturday morning. The women alleged the gang had sexually harassed and intimidated them.

This is the fifth workshop out of the eight planned workshops planned by the NECORD and GTZ.
