Villagers lay conditions to reopen Mavilaru sluice gates

Villagers of Liberation Tigers held Muttur east and Eachchilampathu division in Trincomalee district Thursday laid three conditions to the Sri Lanka Monitoring Mission (SLMM) for re-opening the closed Mavilaru sluice gate. Tamil villagers said at a discussion with the SLMM monitors held at Pallikudiruppu in LTTE held Muttur east Thursday afternoon that they would allow the LTTE to reopen the sluice gates only after their conditions are met. Mr.S.Elilan LTTE Trincomalee district political head also participated, LTTE sources said.

Youth shot dead, two injured in Jaffna

Unidentified men riding a motobike shot and killed a youth at Punnalaikadduvan south, around 6 p.m., Tuesday, sources in Jaffna said. Two others were seriously injured in the shooting. Local residents blamed the paramilitary operatives collaborating with the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) for the shooting. Residents said the SLA soldiers were searching for the three youths and that the three had been assaulted by Sri Lanka Armed forces earlier.

EPDP member shot dead in Jaffna

Maha Kanapathipillai was responsible for Public Relations of EPDP leader Douglas Devananda who is the Sri Lankan Minister of Social Services and Social Welfare.

TNA accuses SL Armed Forces for attack on MP's residence

Condemning in "strongest possible terms this cowardly act on a democratically elected Member of Parliament," the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) in a press release issued Sunday said it has not the slightest doubt that this has been carried out by the "Government Paramilitary Groups and the Government Armed Forces in direct contravention of the Ceasefire Agreement and the agreements reached in Geneva in February 2006." The release added: "It is the refusal of the Sri Lankan Government to deal with its Paramilitary Groups and its Armed Forces as per the Ceasefire Agreement and the Geneva agreements that has been the single most destabilizing factor of the Peace Process."

Jeyananthamoorthy MP's house attacked

Two Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPG) were fired into the house of Batticaloa Member of Parliament (MP) for Tamil National Alliance, S. Jeyananthamoorthy, Friday at 9:15 p.m. The parliamentarian, his wife and two children with their relatives, narrowly escaped the attack that caused damage to the roof of the house located in Batticaloa town. A policeman providing security was wounded in the attack.

A group of PLOTE members claiming to be pro-Tamil nationalists, in a media release issued in Tamil, have alleged that the PLOTE leader Bavan was assasinated by the Sri Lanka Army intelligence in collaboration with the PLOTE hierarchy. Bavan, the leader of PLOTE's military wing in Vavuniya, abducted and killed Thursday, was a leader who turned nationalist and opposed the paramilitary agenda against the PLOTE hierarchy, the cadres have claimed criticising the top hierarchy of the paramilitary organisation for collaborating with the Sri Lanka Army intelligence for getting rid of pro Tamil nationalist elements in the organisation.

Paramilitary gunmen who entered the house of a Tsunami survivor settled at Kalkudah, Paddiyadichenai in Valaichchenai, 29 km north of Batticaloa town, Saturday night, shot the victim dead on the road around 2:00 a.m. Sunday. Police recovered the dead body, riddled with 11 bullets from a T-56 automatic rifle, and identified the victim as Arumugam Kalakaran, 23.

One youth shot dead, two injured in Batticaloa

Unidentified men shot dead a youth and injured another Friday morning around 7.15 a.m. along Sivan Kovil Road at Sinna Urnai Gandhi Village in Batticaloa police division, sources in Batticaloa said. The suspects came in a three-wheeler and chased these two youths and shot at them. The injured had fled from the area, sources added.

More thatn 500 troops from Sri Lanka Army (SLA) cordoned off and searched central and southern grama sevaka areas of Ariyalai Jaffna from early morning till 2:00 p.m., residents in Ariyalai said. Soldiers checked the Identity cards of residents and took away photographs which were shown to a masked paramilitary spotter waiting inside an SLA temporary sentry, local residents said.
