STF resumes forced labour

Compensation awarded in fundamental rights case

A three-member bench of the Supreme Court has ordered Rs: 50,000 as compensation to the petitioner in a fundamental rights violation case. The Supreme Court further ordered that the state should pay Rs:42,500/- and the Officer-in-Charge of the Cinnamon Gardens Police in Colombo should pay the balance amount Rs: 7250/- as compensation to the petitioner, Robert Gnanamuthu.

SLAF, LTTE clash in Batticaloa

The south-western outskirts of Batticaloa town were rocked by heavy gunfire around 10 p.m. today. A member of the Raazeek Group, a Tamil unit of the Sri Lanka Army said that a group of Liberation Tigers who had infiltrated through the high security zone near the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) base had opened fire on an Forward Defence Locality (FDL) near Vidaththalmunai, close to the lagoon.
