Mayor's funeral to be in Jaffna

TULF sources said that Jaffna Mayor Pon Sivapalan's body will be cremated in Jaffna according to his wishes contrary to earlier reports that the funeral was to take place in Colombo. They said that his wife Thavamalar had conveyed his wish. His body will be kept in his house in Siththankerni tomorrow and later at his residence in Jaffna town said sources close to the TULF in the north.

Eighteen killed in Jaffna blast

Sources in Jaffna said that a massive explosion this morning at the Jaffna Municipal council office had killed 18 people including senior members of the Sri Lankan security forces. The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) confirmed that Jaffna town commander, Brigadier Susantha Mendis and his Principal Staff Officer (PSO), Captain Ramanayaka, were killed in the blast.

PeaceAir buys Jumbo jet

PeaceAir, a fledgling Sri Lankan airline, has signed a memorandum of understanding with Boeing for the purchase of a 747-400 passenger jet, the aircraft manufacturer said in a press release Wednesday. The memorandum to acquire the "combi" version of the Jumbo jet was signed at the Farnborough Air Show currently being held in Britain.
