"Tamils should reject Mahinda, Sarath in the presidential poll" - Sivajilingam

"I am contesting in the presidential election only to give the Tamils of the North and East to register their unified protest against the presidential candidates Mahinda Rajapakse and Sarath Fonseka who were the key characters in killing our people and subjecting them to untold suffering," Sivajilingam, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian and the Tamil presidential candidate said Friday in a press meet held in Janatha Hotel in Jaffna. Sivajilingam extended a public appeal to TNA to support him in the election in order to show the world that the Tamils of the North and East reject both Mahinda and Sarath.

22 election related violence reported before nomination day

JVP supporters attacked while putting up Fonseka’s posters

Ruling party supporters Thursday attacked activists of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) while they were putting up posters of General (retd) Sarath Fonseka in three locations in Gampaha district in Western province. Four JVP activists were injured, JVP said in a press release. General Fonseka has been nominated as the common opposition candidate to contest the presidential election.

Emergency extended for another month in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka’s parliament Tuesday evening adopted a motion moved by the Prime Minister Ratnasri Wickremanayake seeking the approval to extend the State of Emergency for another month by a majority of seventy four votes. Ninety five parliamentarians from the ruling party United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and its allies voted for the motion. Twenty one parliamentarians of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the main opposition United National Party (UNP), present in the House voted against.

Attacks on JVP political offices continue, A’pura office ransacked

Supporters of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) are on the rampage in several areas in the south attacking offices of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) since the latter extended its full support to General Sarath Fonseka, who is to contest as the common opposition candidate in the forthcoming presidential election. Submission of nominations by registered political parties is to begin on December 17 and the election is fixed for January 26.

Fonseka files FR petition seeking adequate security

General Sarath Fonseka, former commander of the Sri Lanka Army and Chief of Defence Staff, Tuesday filed a Fundamental Rights (FR) petition in the Supreme Court seeking the court to order the government to provide adequate security and also to direct the government to allow him to stay in his official residence. He stated in the petition that he has come to court as the government is not complying with the request made by him.

Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and Muslim Congress (SLMC) voted against the motion. Main opposition United National Party (UNP) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) abstained from voting.

Emergency extended in Sri Lanka for another month

Sri Lanka’s parliament Thursday adopted a motion to extend the State of Emergency by another month with a majority of seventy votes. Eighty-two parliamentarians from the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and the National Freedom Front (NFF), the rebel group of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) voted in favor of the motion. Twelve Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians who were present at that time voted against the motion. The main opposition United National Party (UNP) abstained from voting. Parliamentarians of the JVP were not present in the House at that time of voting. The State of Emergency is being extended by the parliament monthly since August, 2005.

Each IDP family in Vavuniyaa camp gets only 15 liter water daily – JVP

The Monitoring Centre of the Vanni IDPs in Vavuniyaa camps said Saturday that it had received 723 complaints so far relating to food, clothes, and health and toilets facilities. The monitoring centre is set up by the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). The convener of the centre Mr.Wijitha Herat, JVP parliamentarian, said fifteen liters of water are supplied to each family per day to meet all needs.

25 JVP offices burnt down in SPC election campaign

They were putting up posters about an upcoming meeting when the minister who was passing by stopped and ordered his bodyguards to take the two men away, JVP sources said.
