ITRO condemns SLAF attack on "Peace Village" with 5 orphanages

Chencholai Valaham is the campus among the orphanages at the Peace Village of Vallipunam, said the International Tamils Rehabilitation Organisation (ITRO London), the representative body of the overseas offices of the Tamils Rehabilitation Organisation in a press statement condemning the Sri Lanka Air Force bombing that killed 61 schoolchildren and wounded more than 129. "The area is well known by all parties: the Government of Sri Lanka, the Government Agent, ICRC, UNICEF and all those who work in the Vanni," the organisation said urging the international community to condemn the bombing.

At least 61 schoolgirls were killed and 129 were wounded when Sri Lankan Kfir jets bombed a children's home compound in Mullaithivu district Monday morning where schoolgirls were attending a residential course on first aid, LTTE officials at the Peace Secretariat in Kilinochchi said. Ambulances were rushing the wounded, many of whom are bleeding badly, to hospitals, sources said. Officials of the LTTE, briefing reporters in Kilinochchi, described the attack as “a horrible act of terror” by the Sri Lankan armed forces. UN’s child agency, UNICEF, and international truce monitors have visited the scene of the carnage.

Three NorthEast families receive medical assistance

Tamil Rehabilitation Organization (TRO), through its special medical service unit, during the last two weeks, provided financial assistance of Rs. 570K to three disadvantaged families in the NorthEast to facilitate the sick members to undergo costly medical treatment, officials of the TRO said. TRO is a non-Governmental Organization (NGO) registered with the Government of Sri Lanka and is engaged in rehabilitation work mainly in the north east.

New medical faculty established for Eastern University

The first batch of medical students for the newly opened medical faculty, the seventh in the island, at the Eastern University was welcomed in a ceremony held at 9:00 a.m. on Monday 19th June at Kallady in Batticaloa, administrative officials of the university said. Ravindranath welcoming the new students said, “This new Faculty of Health-Care Sciences, will benefit a million people living in the eastern province extending from Mullaitivu to Pottuvil."

SLAF Kfir bombs target tsunami camp in Mullaithivu

Bombs targeted by Kfir bombers of Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) at a tsunami refugee camp with 300 refugees in Selvapuram on Mullaithivu-Paranthan Road, beyond Vadduvahal bridge, Thursday noon missed the target, sources in Mullaitivu said. Refugees who fled their temporary huts in Selvalpuram seeking safety elsewhere escaped injuries from the indiscriminate bombing from high altitude by the supersonic jets.

10,000 graduate from self-defense training in Mullaitivu

More than ten thousand residents of Vanni villages took part in a graduation ceremony completing self-defense training at the Lt.Malathi Sports ground in Puthukkudiyirruppu in Mullaitivu, Sunday, sources from Vanni said. Graduates wore red-bands and stood in training formations for men and women.

Colombo imposes embargo on cement, steel, limits fuel supply to North

Sri Lankan defense authorities, on Friday, banned the transportation of cement and steel to North. Government Agents (GAs) in Jaffna and Vavuniya have been informed of the decision by the Defense Ministry in contravention of the provisions in the February 2002 Ceasefire Agreement, political sources said. More than 20 lorries loaded with cement have been stopped at Omanthai checkpost Friday and are being held at the checkpost awaiting instructions from Defense Ministry, sources said.

SLN arrests seven youths from Pesalai refugee camp

The "excessive interference" by the Sri Lankan Navy in the sea transport of LTTE commanders, was in total contradiction to the prior agreement with Maj. Gen. Ulf Henricsson, Mr. Thamilchelvan writes in his letter. The sea travel of the LTTE Commanders scheduled on Saturday was cancelled at the last moment in Mullaithivu.

Konesapuri tsunami-hit families receive permanent houses

Twenty permanent houses under a project funded by member firms of KPMG International, a well known audit firm, were handed over to beneficiaries in Konesapuri located about 16 km north of Trincomalee town at an event held on Monday, sources said. The project has funding to build 500 houses to tsunami-affected families in the coastal districts of Sri Lanka. About 100 houses have already been handed over to beneficiaries.

India Church funds new housing for Mullaitivu tsunami affected
