Jaffna High Court released on bail Thursday Eelam People's Democratic Party (EPDP) Thenmaraadchi organizer Allexander Soosaimuthu alias Charles, a suspect in the killing of student Thiruchelvam Kapilnath in Chaavakachcheari, detained in Jaffna prison. The magistrate ordered the suspect not to leave the country and to sign at Jaffna police station every Sunday, sources in Jaffna said.

Malwatte Chapter Chief Incumbent visits newly erected Buddhist temples in Vanni

0The Chief Incumbent of Malwatte Chapter, Most Venerable Thippaduwaave Sri Sumangala thera, accompanied by Buddhist priests visited Vanni Wednesday where he worshiped in the Buddhist temples newly erected by occupying Sri Lanka Army (SLA), sources in Vanni said. Thursday, the Chief Incumbent participated in an event in Nelliyadi Maththiya Makaa Viththiyaalayam in Vadamaraadchi and distributed learning materials to the children of war affected areas of Vadamaraadchi and Thenmaraadchi. This visit is counted as the first by a Chief Incumbent of Malwatte Chapter to Jaffna after many years, sources in Jaffna said.

Chaavakachcheari magistrate express discontent over for police noncooperation

Chaavakachcheari magistrate A. M. Mohamed Riyal expressed strong discontent over police noncooperation Monday when Jaffna police authorities failed to submit the statement of the suspect, Allexander Soosaimuthu alias Charles, Eelam People’s Democratic Party (EPDP) Thenmaraadchi organizer and its candidate in the last general election, in the killing of student Kapilnath in Chaavakachcheari, sources in Jaffna said. Former Chaavakachcheari magistrate K. Pirapakaran who inquired into the case initially was issued with death threats allegedly by EPDP men and then transferred to Akkaraipattu in Eastern Province. Present magistrate Abdul Majid Mohamed too is to be shortly transferred from Chaavakachcheari magistrate court to East and it appears that Sri Lanka police top officials are attempting to upset legal proceedings, legal circles in Jaffna said.

Uprooted civilians in Kodikaamam starve due to reduced food ration

2,307 uprooted civilians of 715 families staying in Raamaavil camp in Kodikaamam in Thenmaraadchi complain of starvation as they are given only rice, that too of a very poor quality, as dry food relief ration. They are forced to sell the poor quality rice as cattle fodder and buy rice for consumption, they further said. The relief dry food ration given under World Food Programme had been suddenly suspended and former Jaffna Government Agent K. Ganesh had announced that the supply of dry food relief ration would be soon resumed, following media reports exposing the sudden suspension, sources in Jaffna said.

SLA soldier recovered dead in Pazhai

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) from Pazhai in Thenmaraadchi handed over the body of a young soldier to Jaffna Teaching Hospital Monday claiming that he was killed in an accident, hospital sources said. Chaavakachcheari magistrate held the inquest into the death in Pazhai and ordered the victim’s body to be sent to his home in Colombo. He further instructed the police to arrange for medical examination of the remains by Colombo Judicial Medical Officer and submit his report to Chaavakachcheari court.

Pathmini Sithamparanathan injured in road accident

Ms. Pathmini Sithamparanathan, former Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian of Jaffna district and her husband Sithamparanathan, lecturer at Jaffna University and two others were injured Saturday around 2:30 p.m when the van in which they were returning from Colombo to Jaffna collided with another vehicle on A9 road in Kodikaamam in Thenmaraadchi. The injured are admitted in the Intensive Care Unit in Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

SLA demolishes Koappaay Thamizh Eezham Heroes Cemeteries

0Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers along with Sinhalese thugs are engaged in obliterating Koappay Thamizh Eezham Heroes War Cemetery (Thamizh Eezha Maaveerar Thuyilum Illam), the only one that remained in Jaffna peninsula, for the last three days, residents of the neighbouring villages said. The remnants of the graves, memorial plaques and monuments are taken away in the night to unknown destination, the sources added.

SLA Civil Admiration Offices in Jaffna to be made permanent

SLA 52 Division Commander Brigadier Lal Perera officially opened a civil administration office in Kodikaamam area in Thenmaraadchi on 30 June in addition to the one already functioning in Jaffna town, sources in Jaffna said. The hurried official openings of SLA civil administration offices in Jaffna peninsula are said to be a part of the government scheme to keep the peninsula under the control of SLA, the sources added. Meanwhile, the Secretary of Presidential Action Committee (PAC) has again instructed the government officials in the North to invite local SLA key officials to all government functions, Jaffna Secretariat sources said.

SLA obliterates Tiger Heroes' Cemeteries, erects military bases

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) which has been systematically razing to the ground without any traces the Thamizh Eezham Heroes War Cemeteries (Thamizh Eezha Maaveerar Thuyilum Illam) in several places of North and East, has in recent weeks obliterated the Thuyilum Illam at Kodikaaman in Thenmaraadchi, Jaffna, and is erecting a big SLA base in its place. Ellangku’lam Heroes Cemetery in Udupiddi in Vadamaraadchi had been already destroyed without any trace and the premises converted into an SLA base. The obliterated Thuyilum Illam is now enclosed by barbed wire fence and hidden by coconut cadjans where a large number of SLA soldiers are hurriedly constructing a base. Tamil circles view the systematic destruction of Tamil war heroes' cemeteries and the symbols of the Tamil struggle in north and East as part of a large-scale genocide programme on Tamils by the Sri Lankan state.

The authorities had permitted resettlement in Thanangki’lappu on the assurance of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Thenmaraadchi that the de-mining of the area had been completed.

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Jaffna Commander and Jaffna Government Agent (GA) who met the uprooted civilians from Vadamaraadchi East still held in Thenmaraadchi interim refugee camps told them Sunday that they cannot be resettled in their own places immediately, sources in Jaffna said. Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) which controls Vadamaraadchi is reluctant to allow resettlement of the original residents, mainly fishermen, as they do not want to hinder the Sinhalese fishermen who now monopolize the deep seas with their trawlers from Naakarkoayil to Mullaiththeevu where most of the fish are caught in Jaffna peninsula, fisheries society representatives in Vadamaraadchi said.

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) authorities are hastily converting the Heroes Resting Homes where Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) war heroes are buried in Vanni main land and Jaffna peninsula, to obliterate all traces of them and to prevent their dear and near ones visiting the tombs in fond memory, sources in Jaffna said. Another reason for the demolishing of the Heroes Resting Homes (HRH) is to prevent people from South seeing them when visiting North, the sources added.

Vanni uprooted civilians in Raamaavil camp protest against suspension of food supply

Nearly a hundred Vanni civilians uprooted due to war and sheltered in Raamaavil camp in Kodikaamam in Themaraadchi gathered Wednesday in front of Thenmaraadchi Divisional Secretariat protesting against the suspension of relief food since 1 May. As the uprooted civilians are free to go out of the camp Jaffna Government Agent (GA) had ordered the suspension of relief food items to the refugees expecting them to find employment and their own means of living, Thenmaraadchi Divisional Secretariat sources said. The civilians complained that their children are starving and demanded immediate resettlement in their own places.

Jaffna Mayor demands detained deputy mayor to be released within 3 days

Ruling Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) Jaffna Mayor, Ms. Yogeswari Patkunam said that unless Jaffna deputy mayor, Ilango alias Regan arrested and detained in Jaffna remand prison is released within three days Jaffna Municipal Council (JMC) employees will abstain from their duties bringing all the work of JMC to a stand still, in a media release to local dailies. Meanwhile, JMC opposition parties accused Mayor’s husband Patkunam of forcing JMC employees to abstain from duty Tuesday. The employees however gave up the protest when Minister Douglas Devananda and the Mayor requested them in the afternoon to do so. Following this Mayor Ms. Yogeswari Patkunam issued the media massage, which has drawn the attention of peninsula residents who consider it as an open challenge to the judicial system, sources in Jaffna said.
