40 Tamil civilians arrested in Polonnaruwa, Chilaw

Forty civilians, most of them are Tamils were taken into custody in two separate cordon and search operations conducted by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and police in Polonnaruwa and Chilaw police divisions. All are being detained in police stations and being interrogated by the Terrorist Intelligence Division (TID).

Tamil trader shot dead in Vavuniyaa

19 SLA killed in Vavuniyaa fighting - LTTE

19 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers, including a Lance Corporal, were killed and 23 soldiers were wounded when Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) fighters at the Kugnchukku'lam Forward Defence Line in Vavuniyaa district put up heavy resistance confronting a multi-frontal attempt by the SLA to break into LTTE territory, according to LTTE officials in Vanni. Two Tiger fighters were killed in the counter-attack.

Outgoing Vavuniyaa Judge says he held inquests into 1000 deaths

Newly appointed High Court Judge of Trincomalee district M.Ilancheliyan at a farewell event held in Vavuniyaa magistrate's court Monday said that he had held inquests into the deaths of over one thousand persons during his service in Vavuniyaa as Magistrate and District Judge, reports from Vavuniyaa said. He added that killing in nights, abductions and disappearances in Vavuniyaa district should be brought to an end. Authorities concerned should move into stop all atrocities committed against civilians in Vavuniyaa without delay.

Three Tamil judicial officers promoted as High Court Judges

Ilancheliyan, R.T.Vikanarajah and Ms Chandramani Sivapathasuntharam currently serving in Vavuniyaa, Jaffna and Trincomalee have been promoted High Court Judges by Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa on the recommendation of the Chief Justice Sarath Silva. The promotions have come into effect from May 16, according to directives issued by Presidential Secretariat.

At least 4 Sri Lanka Army soldiers were killed and more than 7 wounded Saturday when the Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) put up heavy resistance against the SLA that attempted to advance through three fronts targeting Kugnchukku'lam in Vavuniyaa district, LTTE officials told media in Vanni. The SLA's attempt to advance was thwarted after five-hours heavy fighting, the Tigers said. Meanwhile, residents in Vavuniyaa - Mullaiththeevu district border said more people were displaced by the artillery shelling stepped up by the SLA in recent days.

SLA arrests Moratuwa university Tamil students at checkposts

More than 30 Tamil students are detained by the Sri Lankan forces after the attack in Katubedda.

A ground movement by the SLA from Ma'likaiththidal towards Theanudaiyaan in Mannaar, launched at 5:30 a.m. Friday was defeated around 12:40 p.m. 25 SLA soldiers were killed when they again launched the move at 1:00 p.m. 47 SLA soldiers were wounded in the confrontation that lasted till 6:15 p.m. when the SLA was pushed back, the Tigers said. Meanwhile, 3 SLA soldiers were killed in a confrontation that lasted for 90 minutes from 4:10 p.m.

3 police personnel injured in Vavuniyaa claymore attack

Three police personnel including a sub-inspector of the Intelligence Unit of the Vavuniyaa were injured in a claymore attack Thursday morning when they were proceeding in two jeeps to conduct inquiry into the killing of a Tamil woman Mary Josephine Baskaran at Selvanahar in Checkadipulavu Wednesday night. The jeep in which the injured police personnel were traveling was damaged in the explosion, reports said.

Vavuniyaa Court directs army, police to trace missing civilian

Vavuniyaa District Judge and Magistrate M.Ilanchelziayan Thursday directed the Officer Commanding of 211 Division of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) and Senior Superintendent of Police to take appropriate steps to trace the missing person Sivalingam Sivananthan, legal sources in Vavuniyaa said. According to complaints lodged with the Vavuniyaa Police and magistrate court by the victim's relatives, Sivananthan had been abducted by groups of persons who arrived in auto and motor bikes while he was waiting at Poonthoddam junction in Vavuniya on May 19 Monday night, reports said.
