Tamil woman shot dead in Chelvanakar

Fifty year-old Tamil woman was shot dead by unidentified armed persons on Wednesday night in Chelvanakar in Vavuniyaa. She has been identified as Ms. Mary Baskaran. Her husband was shot dead four weeks earlier by unidentified persons, civil sources said.

Youth shot dead in Nelukulam identified

A youth shot dead at Nelukulam in Vavuniyaa on Monday has been identified as S.Mohamed Ali, 24, of Matheena Nagar in Maha Irrambaikullam. His hands were tied and blindfolded with gunshot injuries on his head when his body was recovered Tuesday morning by the police near Nelukulam Kalaimagal Vidiyalayam, reports from Vavuniyaa said.

Vavuniyaa Court directs SLA to arrest abductors

Vavuniyaa Magistrate M.Ilancheliyzan Friday directed the Commanding Officer of the Veappangku'lam detachment of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) to arrest the members of a gang who have allegedly abducted a Tamil trader on Tuesday from his residence in Veappangku'lam. The Magistrate summoned Colonel Perera, Commanding Officer to court and issued the directive on a written complaint made by the wife of the trader to court, legal sources said.

EPDP thanks Rajapaksa, India for Northern Province Interim Council

The decision was passed in a cabinet meeting by Mr. Mahinda Rajapaksa, the EPDP said, and added that it was a 'practical step' advocated by the EPDP for a long time.

Claymore ambush in Weli Oya kills 2 STF commandos

Sri Lankan military officials said two Special Task Force (STF) commandos deployed in the Sinhala settlement of Dutuwewa in Ma'nalaa'ru (Weli Oya) region were killed in a Claymore attack Thursday around 6:45 a.m. This is the first time the STF has admitted to have lost its men in an ambush attack in the Vanni front after STF units were deployed in the sector bordering Trincomalee and Vavuniyaa districts in the North Central Province for providing security to the Sinhalese settlements.

SLA occupation of Madu, triggers fears of renewed Sinhalicisation

The Madu Road junction located on Mannaar-Madawachchi Road, which branches off the main route to Madu shrine, situated in the middle of traditional Tamil area, became the center of a Sinhala settlement in the 1970s. The Sri Lanka Government had the agenda of transforming the area into a full-fledged Sinhala colony, by using the lands of a cashew farm between the Madu Shrine and the junction. However, the settlement was later abandoned, fearing repercussions following large-scale massacre and arson committed by the Sri Lanka Army in December 1984 after a landmine blast. The spectre of a Sinhalicised Madu area has now become a dangerous new reality with SLA's occupation of Madu shrine.

SLA killed, 4 soldiers lose legs in Vavuniyaa

Liberation Tigers of Tamileelam (LTTE) defensive units confronted the Sri Lanka Army in Paalamoaddai and Naavatku'lam in Vavuniyaa district on Sunday. At Paalamoaddai one SLA soldier was killed at 12:30 p.m. when the SLA attempted to advance, the Tigers said. Three SLA soldiers were wounded, two of them lost their legs. At Naavatku'lam Tigers seized a T-56 assault rifle, the Tigers said.

3 civilians wounded in DPU Claymore attack on MPCS lorry

0Three civilians including the driver of a lorry loaded with supplies to the Cooperative Society in Poonakari (Pooneryn) from Vavuniyaa, was attacked by a Deep Penetration Unit of the Sri Lanka Army in the early hours of Tuesday at 1:30 a.m. at Aanaivizhunthaan on Akkaraayan - Vanneari Road. The lorry, carrying essential supplies worth 2.3 million Sri Lankan Rupees to the Poonakari Multi Purpose Cooperative Society (MPCS), which serves to the Internally Displaced People from Poonakari and Mannaar, was destroyed in the attack, according to the General Manager of the Poonakari MPCS, T. Ratnakumar, told TamilNet.
