Sri Lankan security sources in Jaffna today told TamilNet that over 150 Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers have been killed in the heavy fighting with the Liberation Tigers around the SLA base complex at Elephant Pass. The bodies of 60 SLA soldiers have been flown to Colombo the sources said.

Elephant Pass "under seige"

The Liberation Tigers said tonight their forces were laying siege to the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) base complex at Elephant Pass, having launched a multi-pronged assault in the region. In a statement from its London offices, the LTTE denied SLA claims that 200 Tigers had been killed, and said it had lost 15 fighters so far.

Access route for civilians agreed

Ranil promises to resolve conflict

The Presidential Candidate of the United National Party (UNP) and the Leader of the Opposition, Ranil Wickremasinghe, declared that if he is elected, he would stop the war. He also promised to restore the civil administration in the Northeast province, with the establishment of an Interim Council, which would include the representatives of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam. Wickremasinghe was addressing his first election rally in the Tamil dominated north-eastern province this morning at Batticaloa town.
