ICRC trains SLA in humanitarian law

SLA operation in Vanni

The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) began a limited operation into the areas held by the Liberation Tigers north of the Vavuniya-Mannar road in the early hours of the morning today. Army sources in Vavuniya said that the operation was launched from Poovarasankulam, 15 kilometers west of Vavuniya towards Iranai Iluppaikkulam in the interior.

Army arrest figures released

The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) informed the Human Rights Commission (HRC) in Jaffna that 1408 persons were "legally arrested" by them in the peninsula during 1996 and 1997. According to the figures released by the SLA, 991 persons were arrested in 1996, while 417 were arrested in 1997.
