JVP offices burnt down in Galle, Matara

Two election offices of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) located in Seenipella and Kiriveldeniya in Galle and Matara districts were set on fire Thursday night by unidentified gang suspected to be ruling UPFA supporters. JVP member of the Mulatiyana Pradeshiya Sabha and Matara district provincial election candidate Ajantha Gammedda complained to the police that the furniture and several banners in the two offices were destroyed by the fire.

Emergency extended for another month, JVP walks out

Sri Lanka’s parliament Thursday evening approved the motion to extend the State of Emergency for another year by a majority of eighty-seven votes. One hundred parliamentarians of the ruling United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) and its constituent parties voted for the motion. Thirteen parliamentarians of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) voted against. The main opposition United National Party (UNP) parliamentarians were not present in the house during the debate, parliamentary sources said.

JVP to vote against emergency extension

3 JVP journalists released on bail

The three journalists working in “Lanka” news paper run by Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) were released on cash and surety bail Tuesday by Morawaka Magistrate when they were produced in court. The police did not object to the release of Journalists Ravindra Pushpakumara, Shalika Wimalasena and Daya Neththasinghe who were arrested 1 August in Deniyaya and later transferred to Colombo and held in the custody of the TID under the Emergency Regulations (ER) and Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA).

The politburo of the Sinhala Marxist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) is to decide this week whether to support the Extension of Emergency in the country any more in view of the arrest and detention of three journalists working in its official paper “Lanka” under the Emergency Regulations (ER) and Prevention of Terrorism Act (PTA), JVP parliamentary group leader Mr. Anura Kumara Dissanayake told media in Colombo. Police arrested three journalists of JVP in Deniyaya on 2nd September while they were taking pictures and videoing Bewarali estate bungalow.

3 JVP journalists to be detained, JVP supporter abducted

Journalist Sahlika Wimalasena, Daya Nathasingha, and photo journalist Ravindra Pushpakumara of “Lanka”, the official newspaper of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), are to be served detention order by the defence Ministry for further interrogation, according to Deputy Inspector General of Police (DIG) of Criminal Investigation Department (CID), Anura Senanayake, to the media. Police said they took them into custody when they entered a private land without permission and alleged that they were filming a construction site of a new house of a VIP in the Southern Province.

Ruling party gang attacks JVP members

A group of supporters of ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) ran amok Friday night and assaulted some members of Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) who were parading after the closure of nominations for the Southern Provincial Council Friday. Seven JVP members were injured in the attack. The JVP office in Tissamaharagama was also attacked by the ruling party mob the same night, police sources said.

SL government says no salary increase; trade unions prepare for strike

Sri Lanka parliament Thursday adopted a motion to extend the State of Emergency for another month by a majority of sixty four votes. Seventy one Parliamentarians of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA), Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) voted for the motion. Seven Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians voted against the motion.

10 IDPs die daily inside barbed wire camps in Vavuniyaa - JVP

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) said Wednesday it has been receiving reports that due to scarcity of essential needs such as food, water and medicine, on the average, ten internally displaced people die every day inside the camps located in Vavuniyaa. "These people too are citizens of Sri Lanka. Those who are languishing inside the barbed wire camps are our fellow citizens. We call upon the Government not to forget the fact that they tjere arrived on the invitation of the government. It is disgusting to hear of the way the government treats them now,” said JVP leader Mr.Somawanse Amarasinghe addressing a press briefing Wednesday at the JVP head office in Battaramulla.

Only eleven members of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) voted against. The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) and National Freedom Front (NFF), a splinter group of the JVP voted with ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

113 ministers in Rajapakse’s cabinet

The number of ministers in the Cabinet of ruling party United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) led by President Mahinda Rajapakse rose to one hundred and thirteen Thursday with the induction of two more ministers, Nandana Gunatilake and Piyasiri Wijenayake of the National Freedom Front (NFF), a splinter group of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). NFF is an ally of the UPFA since JVP broke away from the alliance, sources in Colombo said.

NFF wants provincial boundaries redrawn

Sri Lanka’s parliament Tuesday adopted a motion to extend the State of Emergency for another month by a majority of ninety five votes. 102 parliamentarians voted for the motion and seven against. This was the first extension of the State of Emergency after the defeat of LTTE last month, sources said.
