Pressure mine kills 3 civilians in Ea'raavoor

Three civilians traveling in a tractor lost their lives Friday around 10:30 a.m in a pressure mine explosion in Ea'raavoor police division along Vanthaa'rumoolai-Uppoadai road. Hope amid tragedy

Antony, a six year old boy lost his leg, his 4-year old brother Reginathan was killed, his mother and 6-month old brother were injured, and his father Jegan lost his leg during 02 January attack by Kfir fast attack aircrafts of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) at the coastal hamlet of Padakuththu’rai in Iluppaikadavai, Mannar town. Jegan lost four of his siblings. Amidst this tragedy, Antony showed remarkable resilience and a unique enthusiasm for his school work when TamilNet visited the family for an interview this week.

LTTE helps Padakuththu'rai bombing victim

S.Thangan, Deputy Head of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eeelam (LTTE) political wing, gave a Tamil Eelam Certificate of deposit for Rs.100,000 to the six year old boy who lost his right leg during 02 January attack by Kfir fast attack aircrafts of the Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF) in Padakuththu'rai Tuesday morning. The event was held at the child's home in Kumizhamunai, Naachchikkudaa, Poonakari. The financial assistance for the child was provided from LTTE leader, Velupillai Pirapaharan’s Trust Fund.

Kurankupaanchaan IDPs to be resettled

Nearly three hundred families displaced from Kurankupaanchaan, a hamlet in Kinniya division in Trincomalee district in 1990, are to be resettled. A team of Sri Lanka government officials led by the Kinniya Divisional Secretary is to pay a visit to Kurankupaanchaan village during the weekend to see the ground situation before making arrangement for the resettlement, civil society sources said.

Mullaiththeevu fishing woes

Thanapalasingham Suman, 22 and his brother Manoharan, 27, were wounded in A'lampil seas in Mullaiththeevu on 28 July this year when SLN Dvora gunboats fired at their fishing boat. The brothers are currently recovering at the Mullaiththeevu District hospital. In an interview with TamilNet this week, Suman said many fishermen in his area have to risk their lives against frequent attacks by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) to feed their family, and often to support ageing parents.

SLA soldiers search Thiriyaai village

Tamils hold May day rally in Paris

Pirapaharan confers Maamanithar award to Poet Naavannan

Leader of Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, Velupillai Pirapaharan, Saturday bestowed the title Maamanithar (Great Human being) posthumously on poet Naavannan, Marusaleen Soosainayagam, who passed away on April 15 last year in Vanni at the age of 58. Mr. Pirapaharan honoured the late poet, a Catholic who hailed from Mannar, for his literary contribution to the Tamil struggle.

SLA holds Tamil journalist, says RSF

Reporters sans frontières (RSF) said in a press release issued Friday that Sri Lanka Army (SLA) was involved in the abduction and disappearance of Subramaniam Ramachandran, a journalist working for Tamil daily, Yarl Thinakural. Ramachandran disppeared on 15 February after being questioned at the Kalikai junction, Vadamaradchy SLA camp, and RSF said his collegeues believe that he is being held in an SLA camp.

JVP, JHU to appeal court order on CFA

The Sinhala nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and all monks' party, Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU), Wednesday said they will appeal the order of the Court of Appeal dismissing their petitions seeking the cancellation of the Ceasefire Agreement (CFA) signed by the then Sri Lanka' Prime Minister Ranil Wickremasinghe with Velupillai Pirapaharan, leader of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), on 22 February 2002, legal sources in Colombo said. Justice S.Sriskandarajah Tuesday said the petitioners have no valid legal reasons to seek the cancellation of the CFA and the court has no jurisdiction to order such act.

Relative of murdered undergrad shot dead in Jaffna

More than ten unidentified armed men forcibly entered the house of a young man in Thavalai, Varani in Thenmaradchy Friday around 1:15 a.m and shot him dead, according to a statement given by his parents to Kodikamam police.
