More bodies appear in Mannar town

The bodies of three youth were found in Mannar town this morning. All of them were shot in the head said Police sources in Mannar. The Sri Lanka army's military intelligence unit had arrested several youth in the Mannar town yesterday residents said. This is the second time during the week that bodies of unidentified youth have appeared in the high security zone of Mannar town. All bodies were found with gunshot wounds.

Bishop asked to mediate POW release

Sri Lanka's Minister for Ethnic Affairs, Mr.Jeyaraj Fernandopulle wrote to the Bishop of Mannar today requesting him to mediate the release of the Sri Lanka army soldiers held by the Liberation Tigers in the Vanni. Church sources in Mannar said that the Bishop is expected to leave shortly, once he obtains clearance to visit the Vanni.

The Voice of Tigers said in its special noon broadcast today that thirty one Tigers including two black Tigers and a member of the organisation's 'border force' were killed in the latest phase of Operation Unceasing Waves III in Jaffna. The total number of Tigers killed so far in the Jaffna offensive since Sunday night is sixty.

Tamil Nadu fisherman dies in custody

A Tamil Nadu fisherman arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy (SLN) last month near Kachchathivu died in custody today. Ms. Maheswary Velayutham, a human rights lawyer who went to see his body at the government hospital in Colombo today charged that he died due to neglect of the injuries sustained when SLN personnel assaulted him during arrest in the high seas.

Woman injured, youth killed in STF fire

A woman was wounded in the stomach when the Special Task Force (STF) commandos of the Sri Lankan security forces opened fire in a village south east of Mannar in the Murunkan sector this morning. The woman, Ponnuthurai Kathirasipillai, 52, was in the kitchen of her house in Vaalkaipetraan Kandal when she was hit in the stomach.

TULF meets President

A six member delegation of the Tamil United Liberation Front (TULF) held discussions with the Sri Lankan President after waiting more than five hours to meet her. The TULF delegation had urged President Chandrika Kumaratunga to resettle people in Waligamam north in Jaffna, restore Thirukketheeswaram, the temple of Shiva in Mannar, allow a Norwegian aid program in Batticaloa and to upgrade the Kalmunai Divisional Secretariat.

'City of Trincomalee' to ferry refugees

The privately owned passenger vessel 'City of Trincomalee' is to be used for transporting displaced Jaffna people from the Vanni region to north under the resettlement scheme. The expenses will be borne by the State. Refugees will not be charged any fee, according to a letter sent by the Commissioner General of Essential Services to Trincomalee Divisional Secretary.
