Warning leaflets prompt search operation

The Sri Lankan Army (SLA) cordoned off and searched Gurunagar, a large coastal suburb of Jaffna town this morning. The operation was carried out on the receipt of information that the Liberation Tigers had left a large number of leaflets at the local community centre last night urging the people of Gurunagar to move away from SLA camps located in the area.

Jeyasikurui continues, 93 killed -SLA

Strain shows at press conference

The SLA spokesman Brigadier Sunil Tennekoon told journalists at today's cabinet press briefing that a joint "project" by the army and Police to arrest 15000 deserters which was launched on October 7, has so far netted 2889 soldiers who have been absconding. He said 25000 soldiers had deserted the Sri Lankan security forces. He said that 14 thousand of these were arrested or returned to their units voluntarily.

Total power cut in Batticaloa

The electricity supply to the Batticaloa district has been completely cut off since 7 p.m. last night. The main power pylons that supply electricity to the whole district located in Vellaveli, about 40 kilometres south west of Batticaloa, were blasted by the Liberation Tigers said Sri Lankan Police sources in Batticaloa.

Five fishermen reported missing

Five fishermen from Karanavai in Karaveddi in Jaffna have been reported missing since Wednesday October 7. The five men, according to sources, had gone from Karanavai on Tuesday October 6 to a relative's house in Maaniavalai in the Sempianpattu area; and on Wednesday Oct. 7 they had set out around 4 a.m. in the early hours of the morning to fish in the lagoon nearby. They have been missing since then.

Youth arrested in Jaffna

MoD issues casualty figures

Jaffna fire-fight kills one
