Ex-paramilitary cadre shot Monday succumbs to injuries

Mr.Varothiayan, who was shot by an unidentified person in Trincomalee Monday night later succumbed to injuries at Dambulla while being transferred to Kandy general hospital for emergency operation, Hospital sources said. He was an active supporter of the paramilitary Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP), which is a constituent of the United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA).

Claymore attack kills Intelligence officer, EPDP cadre in Vavuniya

A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Intelligence Officer, Lance Corporal Ellaperuma Rukman Edward,31, and an Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) cadre, Mr. Gnanakumar Kannan, 28, were killed when unidentified gunmen attacked Kurumankadu EPDP camp located 1.5 km west of Vavuniya Saturday at 11.16 AM. Five paramilitary cadres and another SLA intelligence officer, Mr. Ajith De Silva, 30, were injured in the attack. The attackers used a Claymore mine on the wall of the camp, Vavuniya Police said. The cadres and the camp belonged to EPRLF-Varathar Group until the cadres converted to EPDP a few weeks ago, sources in Vavuniya said.

Unidentified gunmen opened fire on two paramilitary cadres in Nagar Iluppaikulam, about 8 kilometres southwest of Vavuniya, Friday around 12.30 p.m. One of them was admitted Vavuniya hospital with five gun shot wounds. The other is missing, Police said. Both are cadres of the EPRLF (Varathar Group), a paramilitary that operates with Sri Lankan armed forces in the island's northeast.

Ex EPRLF cadre gunned down in Akkaraipattu

An ex cadre of the EPRLF was shot dead in Akkaraipattu, 64 kilometres south of Batticaloa, Tuesday around 5.30 p.m., Police said. He was cycling on the Akkaraipattu-Saahamam road when he was gunned down by an unidentified person. EPRLF is a paramilitary that operates with the Sri Lankan armed forces.

Sri Lanka military responsible for actions of paramilitaries – judge

Vavuniya magistrate Friday observed that the Sri Lanka army should bear responsibility for the disappearance of Mr. Ariyathas Vijayakumar who was abducted by the paramilitary EPRLF (Varathar Faction) on 15 August 2000 in his findings forwarded to the Vavuniya High Court after preliminary inquiry into the Habeas Corpus application. The magistrate, Mr. Manickavasagar Ilancheliyan, said that the SLA’s position that it had no knowledge of the arrest and detention is untenable because paramilitary groups like EPRLF (V) worked with the military.

The man, identified as Valli Sundaram, was riding a motorbike on KKS Road between Maruthanamadam and Inuvil when two gunmen on a motorbike fired on him with a handgun, according to Police.

Paramilitary cadre arrested for rape, murder of girl

Vavuniya Police Tuesday found the skeletal remains of a girl who was allegedly raped and murdered by a member of a paramilitary working with the Sri Lanka army. The girl's skeleton was found, still bound and gagged, in the toilet of an abandoned house in Sithamparapuram on information by three men, including the paramilitary cadre, who were arrested on suspicion Monday. Two skeletons were found Monday in the village, 14 kilometres southeast of Vavuniya.

Batticaloa turns nightmare for local journalists

A journalist in Batticaloa went into hiding Friday, fearing for his life after persons suspected to be members of a paramilitary group working with the Sri Lankan military intelligence threatened him with death, family members told TamilNet. The journalist, Mr. Thanthiyan Vedanayagam, was working as the Batticaloa correspondent for the independent Tamil daily ‘Thinakkural’. Two journalists fled the eastern town earlier this month after they too were threatened with death by persons suspected to be members of a paramilitary group working with the Sri Lankan military intelligence.
