Emerging pattern of agenda in attacks on TNA MP offices - Batticaloa MP

Mr. S. Jeyananthamoorthy, "The office of Tamil Eelam Liberation Organisation (TELO), belonging to Vanni District Tamil National Alliance parliamentarian Selvam Adaikalanathan, was attacked on May 13, 2006. Then the office of the Jaffna MP, S. Kajendran's located in the International Students Association(ISATE) complex was attacked.These attacks could not be explained as arbitrary "acts of violence" by the Head of Sri Lankan Military, the Lankan President Mahinda Rajapakse himself or anyone in the government," slammed Batticaloa MP of Tamil National Alliance (TNA), S. Jeyanandamoorthy Monday.

SLA uses Mannar civilians human shield to avoid claymore attack

Civilians who are traveling by road from Nanattan to Mannar via Vankalai are forcibly taken by soldiers of the Sri Lanka Army on foot as human shield to avoid claymore attacks on their way to army camps. Civilians who use transport services between Nanattan-Mannar Road are asked to get down at Vankalai by soldiers and to join them on foot till they reach their two-army camps located in Naravalikulam and Pasthipuram along Nanattan-Vankalai road, civilian sources said.

Tamil farmer arrested by SLA, reported missing

Mr.Visanthy Aloysius, a Tamil farmer of Vellalarkaddu in Nanattan division in Mannar district is now reported missing after being arrested by the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) on April 29. He was arrested by a group of soldiers when he was going to Sooriyakaddaikadu to sell vegetables. Several villagers witnessed the arrest. Now, SLA officials are denying arresting the farmer, said Mr.Selvam Adaikalanathan and Mr.S.Noharathalingam, Wanni district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarians in a letter sent Friday to the Sri Lanka President Mr.Mahinda Rajapakse.

2 youths killed, paramilitary violence escalates in Batticaloa

Two unidentified gunmen riding in a motorbike shot and killed two Tamil youths, Friday morning around 8:15 a.m. near Kinnayadi Nagathambiran temple, Valaichenai Police said. The killers were suspected to be paramilitary operatives, civilian sources said.

Trincomalee UC to function from Thursday

Teacher shortage in Vanni schools spotlighted

Pesalai fishermen protest against Navy restriction

Several hundreds of fishermen held a sit-in-protest blocking the Talaimannar-Mannar main road at Pesalai bazaar Tuesday morning from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. demanding the immediate withdrawal of restriction imposed by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) on day and night fishing. The SLN has directed the fishermen to obtain pass for them and their fishing crafts and other related equipments before leaving the shore for fishing daily morning. The SLN has banned night fishing, fisheries sources said.

Mannar fishermen's sufferings spotlighted

0About twenty thousand fishermen in Mannar district have been directed by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) to submit their application forms before January 31, with two photographs of each applicant authorized by their respective village level officers (Grama Sevaka Officers), fisheries inspectors and secretaries of fisheries societies, to obtain special permit for fishing in Mannar sea. Starting from February every fisherman should possess a permit before he goes out to sea to fish, SLN said.

Execution-style killings of five students in Trincomalee and three women members of a family in Jaffna mark a stark change of pattern in the escalation of intensified serial killings of non-combatant civilians in Sri Lanka Army (SLA) controlled areas in the NorthEast. The pattern of violence also marks the return of hardliners who seems to prefer terror to subdue a population.

SLN's restrictions strip Mannar fishermen of livelihood- Selvam

Mr.Selvam Adaikalanathan, Wanni district Tamil National Alliance (TNA) parliamentarian Thursday appealed to Sri Lanka's President Mr.Mahinda Rajapakse by a memorandum to take immediate steps to lift the ban on using boats with 30 HP engines and restrictions in taking kerosene by fishermen of Mannar district. He said the restrictions imposed by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) after the violent incidents of December 22 have deprived the livelihood of many local fishermen.
