UPFA seeks TMVP candidates to woo Tamils in Polonnaruwa

Tamil youth shot dead in Batticaloa

Weerawansa, Pillayan discuss alliance

Wimal Weerawansa, a pro-government politician who heads a breakaway faction of the Sinhala extreme nationalist JVP, Saturday morning held discussions with Sivanesathurai Chandrakanthan alias Pillayan, the leader of the paramilitary-cum-political party TMVP, who was recently installed by Mahinda Rajapaksa's ruling UPFA as the Chief Minister of the Eastern Province, to reach a 'common understanding' and to form a 'common political front', informed sources in Colombo told TamilNet. Meanwhile, JVP sources, when contacted with the news, described the move as 'alliance of puppets.'

TMVP person shot, injured in Ampaa'rai

Unidentified armed men on motorcycle shot and seriously injured Friday around 9:15 p.m the person in charge of Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Pulikal (TMVP) office in Aalaiyadivempu in Akkaraippattu police division in Ampaa’rai district, near the office. The injured person was first rushed to Akkaraipattu hospital and then transferred to Ampaa’rai District Hospital for further treatment.

Abducted EPDP person recovered dead in Batticaloa

An EPDP person reportedly abducted by the TMVP group seven days ago was recovered dead near a pond in Vinayaakapuram Friday by the Vaazhaichcheani Police. The dead EPDP person was identified as Kaliyappan Gunaseelan, 34. The EPDP has alleged that a group headed by TMVP operative Ajith had kidnapped Gunaseelan.

East CM wants foreign funds for rehabilitation

Muslim Council urges Rajapaksa to disarm armed group in Batticaloa

The Sri Lanka Muslim Council, the apex body of about 120 Muslim organizations has appealed to Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa to take immediate steps to disarm the illegal armed group operating in the eastern province. "We make this urgent appeal as Muslim people in the province live in fear of their lives and properties due to the presence of the armed group," said in an urgent letter to Mr. Rajapaksa by the Sri Lanka Muslim Council.
