Doubts over bodies identities

The Sri Lanka Army (SLA) handed over 36 bodies to the Mannar base hospital this afternoon around 3.30 p.m. amidst speculation that at least some of these may belong to civilians. The SLA said the bodies were those of Liberation Tigers killed in the fighting near the Pallamadu junction two days ago.

SLA advance thwarted says radio

The commercial radio service of the Liberation Tigers, Thamileela Vaanoli, said in its news broadcast this evening that 200 SLA soldiers were wounded and more than 100 killed in the heavy fighting yesterday northeast of Mannar. The radio said that the LTTE had stopped a massed advance by the SLA to take the Pallamadu junction and that twenty two Tigers were killed in the fighting. The Fighting continued in the area today, according to the Thamileela Vaanoli.

Renewed SLA operation in Mannar

Fighting broke out between SLA soldiers and the Liberation Tigers in the Nayaatruveli area along the Mannar-Pooneryn main road this morning when SLA troops began advancing north from Paappamoddai, said sources in the area. At least 15 SLA soldiers have been reported killed in the fighting today.
