Claymore attack kills SLA trooper, injures 3

Three Sri Lanka Army (SLA) troopers were injured when unknown assailants triggered a claymore mine targetting a SLA road patrol in Veppankulam area in Vavuniya at 7:30 a.m. Saturday, Vavuniya Police said. Injured soldiers have been taken to Vavuniya Teaching Hospital first, and later transferred to Anuradhapur Hospital, according to hospital sources.

TNA appeals to UN: "GoSL uses Humanitarian crisis as tool of war"

The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) consisting 22 out of the 23 Tamil members elected to Sri Lankan Parliament from the NorthEast, in an appeal to the United Nations High Commissioners for Human Rights and Refugees, said that the Government of Sri Lanka was using the humanitarian crisis as a tool of war. Detailing the humanitarian situation prevailing in all the districts of NorthEast, the TNA charged that the GoSL was engaged in a policy to drive the Tamil civilian population out of the Trincomalee District. The TNA's appeal to UN comes a day before the talks in Geneva.

Vavuniya stranded to be sent to Jaffna in November

0The entire districts of NorthEast Wednesday came to a standstill following a shut down protest expressing Tamil opposition to Colombo's move to de-merge the NorthEast. Very few vehicles plied the streets, shops remained closed, businesses and private institutions remained closed and the Tamil towns in Sri Lanka Army (SLA) controlled areas, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Vavuniya, Mannar and Jaffna were deserted, despite the threats by the SLA and paramilitaries.

Vehicle pass system re-introduced in Vavuniya, Mannar

A "Pass" system for all vehicles leaving the districts of Mannar and Vavuniya to rest of Sri Lanka has come into effect from Friday. Vehicles have to obtain passes from police stations in Vavuniya, Chettikulam and Mannar before leaving to outstations, civil sources said. However vehicles moving between Mannar and Vavuniya are exempted from the pass procedures, sources said.

Another soldier's body was brought to Kilinochchi Thursday evening. More than fifty bodies of SLA soldiers are strewn around in the battlefield in unidentifiable state, according to LTTE officials. 133 SLA soldiers were killed in action or reported missing according to the official figures released by the Sri Lankan defence ministry media co-ordinating centre Thursday. More than 200 SLA soldiers were killed when LTTE defense formations under Special Commander Col. Theepan defeated the SLA forces Wednesday, LTTE officials claimed.

Vessel leaves Trinco taking stranded passengers
