Vavuniya PLOTE leader killed

Leader of the PLOTE's military wing in Vavuniya has been shot and killed. The body of Ratnam Sriskandarajah, alias Bavan,46, was found Thursday morning at Cheddikulam, about 15 km. southwest of Vavuniya, police said.

New Hospital opens in Kilinochchi

0The inauguration ceremony of the new General Hospital in Kilinochchi district, was held Monday 10, July 2006 at 11.30 a.m. presided by Kilinochchi district health services officer, Dr. Nandakumar, sources in Kilinochchi said. The hospital building on the main A9 Road in Anandapuram, Kilinochchi built with Rs. 600m funding assistance from the Asian Development Bank (ADB) was opened by Deputy Head of Liberation Tigers Political Wing, S Thangan who was the chief guest. The first phase of 200 beds, of a planned 600 bed facility, is now in operation and open to the public, hospital sources said.

SLA soldier killed in Vavuniya claymore explosion

A Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldier was killed in a claymore explosion in Pirappamadu area in Vavuniya at 9:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, Vavuniya Police said. SLA soldiers were engaged in street patrol near Mahakatukodiya Road in Pirappamadu when the explosion occurred. The seriously injured soldier died on his way to the Vavuniya General Hospital, police said.

Two women arrested by SLA in Vavuniya

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers at the Veppankulam, Vavuniya sentry point arrested two Tamil women at 4 p.m. Monday on suspicion of having links with the Liberation Tigers, Vanni parliamentarian Sivanathan Kishor said. The two women were arrested when they were returning from Chettikulam after attending to registration issues regarding their housing in Maharambaikulam, the parliamentarian said.

Man shot dead by SLA inside Thandikulam HSZ

An unidentified man was killed by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers inside Thandikulam High Security Zone (HSZ) near Vavuniya Sunday night, security sources said. The SLA said the dead man is a member of Liberation Tigers and that they had recovered a AK-47 rifle and a new brand of bullet magazine near the dead body. Civil society sources in Vavuniya, however, said that suspicious circumstances surround the killing, and that the dead body may belong to a civilian arrested by the SLA.

Maj.Gen.Kulatunga took over as the new Commander of Security Forces Headquarters - Wanni [SFHQ-(W)] in August 2004, the position he held when he was killed in a bomb explosion in Colombo Monday.

Parami Kulatunga, Vanni Commander of the SLAA senior top official of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA), Major General Parami Kulatunga, who holds the third position in the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) high command was killed in Pannipitiya, 15 km southeast of Colombo, in Homagama police division in Western Province, in a suicide bomb attack around 7:45 a.m. Monday, Police said. Maj. Gen. Kulatunga, Deputy Chief of Staff, has served as SLA Commander for Vanni High Command of the Sri Lanka Army.

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) troopers shot and killed four fishermen at the shores of Pesalai in Mannar and lobbed at least four grenades Saturday morning into the Church of Our Lady of Victory in Pesalai, killing a woman and wounding at least 44 persons, half of them in critical condition. The four fishermen were killed at the shores of Pesalai, 15 km northwest of Mannar, around 7:00 a.m. Saturday, when the troopers began attacking civilians after a naval battle with the Sea Tigers near Pesalai. Six of eight missing SLN troopers were confirmed dead in the sea fight, according to SLN sources.

064 passengers, including fifteen children and a Buddhist monk, were killed and around 94 wounded when a civilian bus was caught in a claymore mine blast near Kebitigollawe, 23 km southeast of Vavuniya, around 7:50 a.m. Thursday, police sources said. Wounded survivors were rushed to Kepitigollawe and Anuradhapura hospitals. The majority of victims are Sinhalese, officials said.

Sri Lanka Army Deep Penetration Unit exploded a Claymore mine seriously wounding the driver of the vehicle in which Vavuniya North Divisional Secretary was riding in the LTTE controlled Mathiyamadu village. The driver, N. Balasingam, seriously wounded in the attack and rushed to Vavuniya hospital, succumbed to his wounds while being transferred to Anuradhapura hospital, medical sources said.
