SLA intensifies restrictions on fishing in Jaffna peninsula

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna has imposed additional restrictions on fishing in the seas of Jaffna peninsula to facilitate safety of their troops’ transport between Kurikkadduvaan in Pungkudutheevu in the islets of Jaffna and Mannaar, fisheries society representatives in Jaffna said. The existing ban on fishing onTuesdays and Wednesdays in a week has been extended to other days too as transport of troops through the newly opened A9 land route is not feasible enough as anticipated by the SLA, sources in Jaffna said. The additional restrictions on fishing have deprived the fishermen in Jaffna peninsula of their sole livelihood, the sources expressed concern.

93,877 displaced 19 years ago yet to be resettled in Jaffna

Nearly 93,877 civilians belonging to 27,601 families displaced due to war from various parts of Jaffna peninsula 19 years ago still languish in refugee camps while most of them are living with their relatives or friends, a statistical report of Jaffna Secretariat said. 73,672 persons of 21,591 families were displaced before 31 December 2005 and 20,205 persons of 6,010 families were displaced after the A9 land route to Jaffna peninsula was closed by Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in 2006, according to the report.

SLN imposes ban on fishing in Jaffna peninsula

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) imposed new restrictions in Jaffna peninsula banning fishing in seas of the islets as well as in Jaffna lagoon on Tuesdays and Thursdays, fisheries society sources in Jaffna said. SLN has warned that fishermen attempting to go fishing on these two days will be shot at and their boats confiscated, the sources added.

Danish media consultant refused entry into Kaarainakar by SLN

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) did not permit Dr. Henrik Grunnet, the media consultant of the Media Research and Training Centre (MRTC) affiliated to Jaffna University to attend an introductory event of a media course that was to be inaugurated Wednesday at Kaarainakar R. Thiyagarajah Maththiya Viththiyaalayam in his official capacity and as a guest of honour, sources close to MRTC said. Vice-chancellor emeritus of Jaffna University and the Director of MRTC, Prof. Pon. Balasuntharampillai, the chief guest of the event, had accompanied Dr. Henrik Grunnet to Ponnaalai SLN at the entrance to Kaarainakar where Grunnet was sent back by the SLN.

Journalist Sathiyamoorthy killed inside Safe Zone

0Puniyamoorthy Sathiyamoorthy, journalist and political analyst, well-known and highly respected by the Tamils in Eelam and among diaspora Tamils, sustained serious injuries in the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) artillery barrage Thursday on Theavipuram in the 'safety zone' declared by Sri Lanka government in Mullaitheevu district in Vanni, and succumbed to his wounds. Lack of proper medical attention contributed to his death, according to relatives who cared for him after the incident.

SLN arrests 22 Tamil Nadu fishermen in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) based in Oorkaavattu’rai (Kayts) Wednesday night rounded up 22 fishermen from Tamil Nadu said to be fishing in the seas of the islets of Jaffna, sources in Jaffna said. The fishermen were produced in Oorkaavattu’rai court Friday where Oorkaavattu’rai magistrate Ms. Joy Mahatheva directed the police to place them in custody in Jaffna Prison.

Seventh body washed ashore in Delft

A decomposed body believed to be of a male was recovered by Neduntheevu (Delft) and Oorkavaththu'rai (Kayts) Police Saturday, and was transferred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, sources in Jaffna said. The recovery brings the total to seven unidentified bodies, four in Kaangkeasanthu'rai, and two in Point Pedro (Paruththith-thu'rai) recently recovered in the shores of Jaffna peninsula and islets.

SLA imposes new restriction on fishing in Jaffna peninsula

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna has imposed new restrictions since 1st of January 2009 on fishing in Jaffna lagoon and in the seas of the islets of Jaffna citing security reasons, sources in Jaffna said. Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) has become increasingly concerned of the of the infiltration for the LTTE, sources added. Meanwhile, Jaffna Government Agent (GA) has made arrangements for canned-fish to be used in the free meals given to students of the schools in the peninsula, due to shortage of fish, the sources added.

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) troopers in Oorkaavattuirai (Kayts) arrested 12 fishermen fishing with Sri Lanka Army issued fishing pass Monday morning on Paalaitheevu seas close to the islets of Jaffna. The SLN confiscated the passes, 36 boats, fishing equipment and the catch from the 12 fishermen and took them to their base in Oorkaavattu’rai.

Kaarainakar SLN sailor commits suicide

A Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) sailor attached to Kaarainakar SLN base in Jaffna shot himself to death Friday night, according to the statement made by the Officer-in-Charge of Kaarainakar SLN base to Oorkaavattu'rai (Kayts) police. Gun fire was heard Friday night after which the body of the SLN sailor was found with gunshot wounds by the SLN in Kaarainakar, the statement said.

Sinhalese medical officers in Jaffna to be given protection

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) authorities, during a meeting with Sinhalese medical officers serving in Jaffna peninsula Thursday in Jaffna, agreed to provide Police and SLA protection with effect from Monday to all hospitals including Jaffna Teaching Hospital where Sinhalese medical officers work, sources in Jaffna said. This move comes in the wake of the Sinhalese medical officers in Jaffna peninsula announcing their decision to leave Jaffna peninsula for security reasons, triggered by the killing of a Sinhalese doctor in Eastern Province.

Police arrests family man from the islets, in Jaffna

The police had not accepted the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) identity card certifying his permanent residence in Pungkudutheevu as well as his occupation as a fisherman.

Jaffna fishermen's woes discussed with GA, in civil society meeting

Government Agent (GA) met with a delegation of civil society members from the Federation of Fishermen societies from the peninsula to explore solutions to hardships faced by fishermen in Jaffna district last week. 5 bodies washed ashore in Jaffna islets indentified

The bodies of five persons washed ashore recently along with three other corpses in Analaitheevu, Nedunththeevu and Pungkudutheevu islets of Jaffna, were identified by a relatvie Monday in the presence of Oorkaavattu'rai (Kayts) Magistrate Ms. Joy Mahadeva at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital, hospital sources said. The five persons belonging to the same family died when their boat capsized mid-sea while returning to Mannaar to escape unbearable living conditions in the Tamil Nadu refugee camp, sources in Jaffna said.

Bodies of returning refugees washed ashore off Jaffna
