Tigers, SLA fight artillery duels in Jaffna

Woman gang raped, mother assaulted

A woman allegedly gang raped by Sri Lanka army soldiers in Meesalai on Saturday night was admitted to the Manthikai hospital in Jaffna Sunday. Hospital sources said that the woman has been raped brutally. The women's mother who had attempted to stop the soldiers from molesting her daughter was severely assaulted and has also been admitted to the hospital for treatment, sources said.

SLN clubbed, murdered father of seven -MP

The murder of Kandaiah Uthayakumar, father of seven, who was arrested Wednesday 28 February by the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) in Savalakaadu in Mannar should be investigated and the persons responsible should be brought to book, said Mr.Selvam Adaikalanathan, MP for the Vanni, in an appeal sent to the Sri Lankan President Sunday. He told TamilNet that the SLN personnel had surrounded and searched Uthayakumar's house around 9 p.m. Wednesday. They had accused Uthayakumar of smuggling banned commodities to the Vanni and assaulted him in front of his crying children.

Bribe demands worsen villagers' woes

Two more suspects identified in Mirusivil

Two more Sri Lanka Army soldiers (SLA) accused of murdering eight Tamil civilians, including a 5-year old boy, at Mirusuvil on 19 December were identified by the prime witness, Ponnuthurai Maheswaran, during an identification parade held Thursday. Three SLA soldiers, including an officer, were identified by the witness on Wednesday.

Tigers move towards SLA's Thenmaradchi MSR

Battle units of the Liberation Tigers, having overwhelmed Sri Lanka Army positions on the supply route linking the SLA garrison in Nagar Kovil with the main military base in Eluthumadduval, have crossed the road in the direction of the general area between Mirusuvil and Varani, civilians who fled the war zone Saturday told TamilNet. The Sri Lanka army Saturday allowed about 1500 civilians fleeing the war zone in Jaffna's southern sector to leave Thenmaradchi according to TamilNet's Vadamaradchi correspondent.

Fighting close to SLA garrisons

Fighting raged close to the defence perimeters of the Sri Lanka army bases in Eluthumadduval and Kilali through the early hours of Thursday morning as troops of the Liberation Tigers that had overwhelmed several layers of the SLA's forward defence localities in this sector pressed on with their multi-pronged assault. The commanders of the SLA, Sri Lanka Air Force and Navy flew to Jaffna to co-ordinate efforts to re-organise defences and to regain some of the key forward defence localities captured by the Tigers Tuesday.

Heavy fighting continues in Jaffna

Fighting continued Wednesday between the Liberation Tigers and the Sri Lanka army at Eluthumadduval in the Jaffna peninsula. Military sources in Jaffna said that troops are still attempting to repulse Tiger units that overwhelmed some forward positions of the SLA in the Eluthumadduval-Muhamaalai sector Tuesday night. Civilians attempting to leave the northern Thenmaradchchi sector via the Kodikamam-Nelliyadi road to Vadamaratchchi were stopped by troops on the only SLA-held road out of the region.

Bishop says 500 civilian casualties in Madduvil

"I am given to understand that the attitude of the armed forces is that 'it is better to kill the people than allow them to go into the LTTE controlled areas' the Bishop states in the appeal.

A senior commander of the Sri Lanka army (SLA) in Jaffna claimed today that his troops have recaptured the segment of the MSR that was controlled by the Liberation Tigers from March 27. Residents in Mirusuvil, however, said this evening that heavy fighting continues to rage on the A9. About 200 SLA soldiers were wounded and three tanks were damaged in fierce engagements near Muhamaalai today, according to SLA sources in Kodikamam.

Protestors blockade Jaffna Kachcheri

Hundreds of people blocked the entrance of the Jaffna Kachcheri from this morning demanding that the civilians in the war zone in Jaffna's southern sector be allowed by the Sri Lanka Army to move out of their villages forthwith to safer areas in other parts of the peninsula. An urgent note to the Sri Lanka army's 52-2 brigade in Kodikamam was sent by the Government Agent for Jaffna following the blockade urging the officers there to do the needful for the civilians' release. There was no reply to his note until 5 p.m. today, Kachcheri officials said. The blockade of the Jaffna District Secretariat continues.
