Jayasuriya's inclusion in cricket team raises awareness of SL mass killings

0Several dozen British Tamils leafleted Saturday outside the Bristol grounds where Sri Lanka’s cricketers played a Twenty20 match against England to further raise awareness of the mass killings of civilians at the end of the war in 2009. Their efforts were assisted by critical commentary in the British press of Sri Lanka’s inclusion of all rounder Sanath Jayasuriya, who is also a parliamentarian of President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s ruling party, for the remaining one day matches of their tour. Ahead of the match three of Britain’s top broadsheets – The Daily Telegraph, The Times and The Guardian - slammed the decision as a ‘scandal’ and urged spectators not to applaud Jayasuriya.

According to Sri Lankan state-owned media on Wednesday the vehicles, which are transporting the petition with letters against the UN report are now returning to Colombo, after which, the government will hand over the petition to the UN.

UNP claims 20 UPFA parliamentarians to leave government

The main opposition United National Party (UNP) in south Wednesday claimed about twenty government parliamentarians were holding discussion with its leadership to leave the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA). UNP Badulla district parliamentarian Harin Fernando told a media briefing that the disgruntled UPFA parliamentarians, including some senior ministers, were ready to join the UNP under its new leadership.

Moves are underway to restructure the Army before January 1st, 2011, the Lankadeepa newspaper said quoting Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Commander Jagath Jayasuriya at a function held in Anuradhapura to commemorate the army’s 62st anniversary. Special military units will be appointed in every district following the restructuring of the military, according to Jayasuriya. All security forces units in the north and east will also be strengthened in the coming months as part of the overhaul, the Commander added.

LLRC member Prof. Jiffry passes away

Professor M. T. M. Jiffry, one of the eight member- Lesson and Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) passed away Friday morning after a brief illness in Colombo. His burial took place Friday evening at Dehiwala Jummah Mosque. Born in Matara, Jiffry was the Professor of the Medical Faculty in Sri Jayewardenepura University.
