Ex-president of Co-operative union shot dead in Thenmaraadchi

Unidentified gun men shot dead the former president of Kodikaamam Multi Purpose Co-operative society (MPCS) Thursday around 6:30 a.m, in front of his house at Naavatkaadu in Va’rani in Thenmaraadchi, sources in Jaffna said. The victim is the fourth person engaged in co-operative activities in Jaffna peninsula to be shot and killed, the sources added.

Pilfering of goods at KKS Harbour adds to material loss

SLA cordon, searches Vaddukkoaddai, youth missing in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) launched an extensive cordon off and search operation in Thu’naivi and Changkaraththay in Vaddukkoaddai area from Thursday early morning, ordering more than fifteen youths to reclaim at the SLA camps in their localities, the National Identify Cards (NIC) confiscated during the operation, sources in Jaffna said. Meanwhile, a youth from Koa’ndaavil west is reported missing since Saturday.

2 civilians shot dead in Jaffna

Unidentified gunmen following a youth riding a bicycle from his house Thursday morning at Maasiappiddi, Changkaanai in Valigaamam, opened fire on him causing serious injury. The youth, rushed to Thellippa'lai government hospital, later succumbed to his wounds. Meanwhile, unknown armed men shot and killed an employee of a liquor shop Thursday around 4:30 p.m at Brown Road-Naavalar Road junction, in the centre of Sri Lanka Army (SLA) High Security Zone (HSZ) in Jaffna, sources in Jaffna said.

Newspaper staffer abducted in Valikaamam

A circulation staffer at the Jaffna daily, Yaazh Thinakkural, has been reported missing after taking papers for distribution from Yaazh Thinakkural office in K.K.S Road at 6:00 a.m. Sunday, his wife registered complaint at the Thellippa'lai police. The staffer is feared abducted while attending to his daily duty in Eazhaalai area where a Sri Lanka Army (SLA) camp is located.

3 civilians killed, 30 wounded in bomb blast in Chunnaakam, Jaffna

Three civilians were killed and 30 wounded following an explosion near Chunnaakam market town in Valikaamam in the Jaffna district Thursday around 10:00 a.m. Legal sources said the Chunnaakaam Police has told the Court that one policeman was wounded in the blast. Police claimed that a Claymore mine had targeted a police vehicle.

Jaffna Government Agent (GA), Jaffna Magistrates, Sri Lanka Army (SLA) Jaffna Commander, Major. Gen. G. A. Chandrasiri, Northern Region Police Commissioner, S. Siriwardne, Jaffna Police Superintendent and several key officials met Monday morning at Thellippa'lai police station in Jaffna and discussed setting up Vigilant Committees as a preventive measure to curb the death threats, intimidation and extortion rampant in Jaffna peninsula alleged to be carried out by Tamil paramilitaries backed by the SLA, sources in Jaffna said.

A few devotees attend Maaviddapuram CAR festival

Only around two thousand devotees entered through Sri Lanka Army (SLA) checkpoint in Thellippazhai to attend the Thear festival of the historic Maaviddapuram Kandasamy temple located inside the Valikaamam north High Security Zone (HSZ). After the SLA offensives in 1990 civilians living close to temple and surrounding areas were evicted, and in 1999 the area was demarcated to fall within the HSZ, despite protests from Chaiva organizations.
