Opposition parties to form alliance against election violence

Mangala Samaraweera, rebel Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) parliamentarian, has started talks with the main opposition United National Party (UNP), Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), and Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) to form an alliance to oppose the increase of election related violence in the elections to the North Central Provincial Council and Sabragamuwa Provincial Council scheduled to be held on August 23, sources in Colombo said.

JVP parliamentarian accuses government of 'white van culture'

Parliamentarian Mr.Wijitha Heart, Propaganda, propaganda secretary of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), told media Friday that abductions are now being carried out in the country with the blessing of the government. The excavation of a corpse of a Tamil person who is alleged to have been abducted and later found to be dumped in the premises of the office of the Eelam Peoples Democratic Party (EPDP) in Batticaloa, clearly points complicity of Colombo in the abduction-murder, the JVP MP added. EPDP is a constituent of the ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA) government, and the leader of EPDP is a cabinet minister.

For the first time in two years, after Colombo launched its war, public and private sector employees in South have come to the open demanding higher wages from the government, despite Rajapaksa government's appeals to the public to back the military campaign. Ironically, the extreme nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), which helped Mr. Rajapaksa into power and backed the military campaign, has come out openly to campaign for a salary increase of Rs. 5,000 per month and have threatened to launch a three day strike which comes in the backdrop of a one day token strike which had mixed results.

JVP urges removal of restrictions on Trinco coastal villages

The Sinhala nationalist Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), which is opposed to Rajapaksa government's move to hand over lands in Moothoor to India's infrastructure investment of Coal-Fired Power Plant, warned Friday that it would launch a protest campaign against the ruling UPFA government if it fails to meet the requirements of the fishermen along four coastal divisions including Moothoor. The government should lift the restrictions on fishing and extend the duration allowed for fishing in Trincomalee's coastal areas or pay monthly 20,000 rupees per family as relief for their livelihood until normalcy returns.

War of words on opposition's strike

CTTU extends support for General strike

White van involved in attack on Anuradhapura JVP offices

Thirteen election-related violent incidents have been reported from the North Central Province and Sabragamuwa Province since the closure of nominations for the provincial council election which has been fixed for August 23, according to complaints received by police election secretariat Tuesday. Of them two complaints had been related to the attacks made on the two offices of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) located in Anuradhapura town in the north central province on Monday night.

State of Emergency extended in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka's parliament Tuesday after a full day debate adopted the motion to extend the State of Emergency for another by a majority of 97 votes. 111 parliamentarians voted for the motion and 11 against. The ruling United Peoples Freedom Alliance (UPFA), the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and Jathika Nidahas Peramuna (JNP), splinter group of the JVP supported. Eleven parliamentarians of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) voted against the motion, parliamentary sources said.

Paramilitary 'safe houses' hinder peaceful PC election -JVP

Candidates contesting on behalf of opposition parties in the North Central Provincial Council election are reported to have expressed fear that 'safe houses' used by the Tamil Makkal Viduthalai Puligal (TMVP) paramilitary in villages Thiruchcheanai, Muthgala, Madurangala, Thuruvilla, and Mannampiddi where about 5,800 Tamils are living, would hinder peaceful election, media reports said quoting M.Palitha Upul Kumara, a former councillor of the NCPC. Mr. Upul Kumara, a resident of Mannampiddi, is contesting the election on the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) ticket.

Weerawanse's JNP registered as new political party

The Commissioner of Elections Dayananda Dissanayake Thursday announced that two new political parties, Janatha Nidahas Peramuna (JNP), and Patriotic National Front (PNF), have been registered with the Department of Elections with effect from July 3. The JNP was formed by parliamentarian Wimal Weerawanse who broke away from the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) with ten parliamentarians. The present parliamentary strength of the JVP is 27.

SL Supreme Court dismisses petitions against dissolution of provincial councils

The Sri Lankan Supreme Court Friday refused without inquiry four petitions filed separately by the main opposition United National Party (UNP) and Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) challenging the dissolution of the Sabragamuwa Provincial Council and North central Provincial Council by the respective governors was illegal. UNP filed two petitions, one against the dissolution of SPC and the other against NCPC. Like wise the JVP also filed two petitions, legal sources said.
