SL Forces lift fishing blockade in Jaffna

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) High Command in Jaffna allowed fishing in coastal areas in Vadamaradchy north and east with specific restrictions starting from Saturday, fisheries society sources in Jaffna said. Fishermen were allowed fishing during day-light hours, within one 1km from the shores, and can only use non-motorized boats, sources added.

Peoples' Committee urges opening of western sea-route to Jaffna

Thomas Savundranayagam, the Bishop of Jaffna, said that he has requested Sri Lanka's President Mahinda Rajapakse to open a sea route from Kurrikaduvan in the jaffna Islets to Mannar enabling people to travel to and fro from the peninsula, sources said. Closure of A9-highway has seriously affected the lives of the peninsula residents, the Bishop said in a press meet held by the Peoples' Committee for Peace and Goodwill (PCPG) Sunday around 3:00 p.m at the Jaffna Bishop House.

SLN bars pilgrims from attending Kachchathivu festival

Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) denied permisssion to Tamil Catholic pilgrims to participate in the annual festival of the St. Antony’s church in Kachchathivu, an isle situated in the Palk Straits between Sri Lanka and India about 15km southwest of Delft (Nedunthivu) islet, scheduled for this weekend, sources in Jaffna said. Pilgrims from India and Sri Lanka in thousands visit this isle every year, meet their kith and kin and barter goods from both countries.

SLA imposes day time travel restrictions in Jaffna

The high command of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) from Palaly announced Friday that in addition to the 11 hour night time curfew already in place, there will be further restrictions of civilian movement during day time. SLA directed general public to avoid certain roads during a three and a half hour period, morning between 10:00 a.m. and 12.00 noon and again between 3:00 pm- and 4:30 pm in the afternoon, sources in Jaffna said.

Jaffna youth seeks protection with HRC

One more Tamil civilian sought protection from the Jaffna branch of the Human rights Commission (HRC) Tuesday, HRC officials said. The 24-year old youth is from Allaippiddy in Jaffna islets and was staying as an internally displaced person at the IDP camp in Our Lady of Rosary (OLR) church when he sought safety with the HRC, officials added.

Shell explodes in Velanai

A shell exploded in near the Navalar Community Development Centre in Velanai, a village on the island of Kayts off the Jaffna peninsula, at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday forcing the villagers to scatter in panic, residents in the islets said. No one was injured in the explosion. Some of the buildings nearby sustained minor damages, sources said.

Reopening of Jaffna University delayed

Jaffna Campus to reopen 22 January

0Jaffna University board of governors, at a meeting presided by the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kumaravadivel, decided to reopen the Campus on 22 January, administrators at Jaffna campus said. Sri Lanka Military Command has agreed to arrange sea transportation to the more than 800 out of district students to come back to the campus, officials added.

Six civilians disappear in Jaffna last week

The disappearances and arrests in Jaffna have escalated to alarming proportions in the last few months as part of the counter-insurgency campaign mounted by Colombo on the civilian population in the district, according to rights officials in Jaffna.

8 white van abductions in Jaffna in 5 days

Sri Lanka Army (SLA) soldiers and collaborating paramilitaries have abducted eight youths, including two students, in the Jaffna district between 20th and 25th December, according to complaints filed by the relatives with the Jaffna Human Rights Commission (HRC), civil society sources in Jaffna said. SLA troops arrive in Buffel armoured cars with paramilitaries in white vans, and abductions take place either on streets in broad day light or at the victims' houses during night, the relatives of those abducted said.

SLA allows limited fishing in Jaffna lagoon

Following talks held Saturday between the representatives of Fishermen Societies in Pasaiyoor, Gurunagar, Colombuthurai and officials of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) in Jaffna, limited fishing was allowed in Jaffna lagoon providing a measured relief to fisher families affected by the four month old fishing ban, fisheries society sources said. The relaxation did not apply to Vadamaradchi north, east and many of the islets.

0Jaffna's 'fisheries belt' which accounted for 37 percent of the island’s total catch two decades ago, today lies inside the Sri Lanka Army’s (SLA's) largest high security zone in the northeast. The peninsula's sea coasts, including the southern coastal waters of Jaffna lagoon, except Jaffna Islets, remain off-limits for fishing under a Sri Lanka Military enforced ban. In this scenario, the Sunday announcement by SLA that fishing ban in Vadamarachchy North is relaxed for fishing within 50 meters from the shore, is unlikely to lend succor to the fisher families struggling in dire poverty without a means of livelihood.

Viral fever spreads in Jaffna

SLA trooper killed in Vadmaradchi, woman injured in Kayts

Unidentified men triggered a claymore device hidden along the Udupiddy-Valvettithurai road Friday around 5:00 a.m killing a trooper of the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) unit returning to Valvettithurai SLA camp after constructing sentry posts near Ellankulam Heroes Resting Home, sources in Jaffna said. In a separate incident, a young Kayts woman was injured Friday by a stray bullet fired during the Sri Lanka Navy (SLN) combat training at the Kayts SLN base. She was rushed to Jaffna Teaching Hospital.

Headless body of abducted Kayts youth found

Civilian killed in artillery fire in Mirusuvil

A civilian from Thavasikkulam, Mirusuvil in Thenmarachchi region was killed when a shell exploded in the area around 6:00 pm Wednesdy, civil sources said. Sporadic exchange of artillery fire between Liberation Tigers and the Sri Lanka Army (SLA) continues across Muhamalai Forward Defense Lines (FDL), according to residents in Thenmaradchy.
