SLFP to mobilize people support against UNF government
[TamilNet, Friday, 03 October 2003, 01:42 GMT]
The Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) has decided to conduct agitation campaign against the policies of the United National Front (UNF) government in Colombo within the next two weeks, party sources said.
President Ms Chandrika Kumaratunge who is the president of the SLFP has
been conferring with party senior leaders and electoral organizers to
mobilize large crowd for the opposition rally and demonstrations scheduled
to be held shortly, sources said. Party organizers at village level have started organizing pocket meetings in their areas canvassing support for the SLFP claim that UNF government's peace process is a "sell out to LTTE" the entire northeast
province, party sources said. In another political development in Colombo, President Ms Chandrika
Kumaratunge has been soliciting views of senior SLFP leaders
about resuming the failed talks with the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and
extending an invitation to JVP leaders in this regard, sources said. Although President Chandrika Kumaratunge has appointed a committee headed
by party general secretary Mr.Maithiripala Sirisena to go into the question
of resuming talks to form a political alliance with the JVP, invitation for talks has not yet been offered to the JVP,
sources said. The JVP propaganda secretary and parliamentarian Mr.Wimal Weerawanse
said his party politburo would meet to take a decision if the SLFP
leadership extended an invitation for such talks, sources said. SLFP was founded about fifty years ago by late
Prime Minister Mr.S.W.R.D.Bandaranaike, father of President Ms Chandrika
Kumaratunge.
