Buried trawler discovered in Batticaloa

Villagers of Onthachimadam, a beachtown in Batticaloa, discovered a trawler type ship buried nearly 30' below ground. The ship was found close to the beach now filled with mud by a village resident who went to look for old plastic goods for resale in the village market, sources said.

Kaluwanchikuda police who visited the scene when notified of the matter told the villagers not to dig any further and informed the archeological officers to conduct the necessary investigations. Residents speculated that this may the ship that was rumoured to have disappeared during the cyclone that devastated the region in 1978.
