Palmyrah frond edges said main cause of cut injuries

Razor-sharp edges of the ubiquitous palmyrah frond found in the NorthEast are said to be the main cause of injuries suffered by the coastal area residents who were severely injured by the rushing tsunami waters inland in areas of NorthEast. In Jaffna, the injuries were mainly caused by collapsed buildings and other structures, sources engaged in relief operations said.

Palmyrah estates are a common site along the interiors and coastal areas of much of NorthEast and is central to the ecology of NorthEast. Many families depend on the produce from their small palmyrah estate holdings for their living.

Palmyrah fronds are used to build fences. Palmyrah saplings 5-30 feet high have the deadly frond edges exposed.
