Red Cross signs MoU to reconstruct tsunami hit medical institutions[TamilNet, Tuesday, 15 March 2005, 13:19 GMT]The Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) and the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) have undertaken to reconstruct, renovate, repair and equip General Hospitals, Base Hospitals, District Hospitals, Rural Hospitals, Peripheral Units and Central Dispensaries in the tsunami affected areas throughout the island. The project includes health facilities in the districts of Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Batticaloa, Jaffna, Amparai, Trincomalee, Killinochchi, Mullaitivu, and Puttalam and will include the maintenance for 5 years, according to the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Ministry of Health Care, Nutrition & Uva Wellassa Development for and behalf of the Government, the Sri Lanka Red Cross Society (SLRCS) and the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC) in Colombo signed in Colombo on the 14 March..
The project will be implemented in accordance with the guidelines, specification designs and standards given by the Ministry of Health. The Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau (CECB) will prepare the developmental plan in consultation with the Ministry of Health. A committee of five persons with proven ability and expertise in the fields related to the project will be appointed by the Ministry of Health to oversee project activities. The Red Cross will assist the committee in the discharge of its functions, the press release added. The Reconstruction and Rehabilitation Programme will include: Earlier the SLRCS President Jagath Abeyasinghe handed over a Memorandum of Understanding expressing the willingness of the International Red Cross and Sri Lanka Red Cross Society to construct 15,000 houses in all tsunami-affected districts to President Chandrika Kumaratunge, the press release stated.
