Trade union urges public servants to boycott postal voting

Consortium of Tamil Speaking Peoples Trade Unions in Jaffna appealed to public servants in the district to boycott postal voting for the November 17 presidential poll. The statement charged that the presidential candidates have once again ignored the Tamil speaking people by their "impractical promises." A solution that is dependent on "ethnic majoritarian consent," as the way to resolve the Tamil National question, will stand little chance of being successful, the statement further said.

"How could Tamil speaking people expect a fair and reasonable political solution to the national question from these two parties, which are opposing the establishment of an administrative structure such as P-TOMS for the rehabilitation and reconstruction of the tsunami-destroyed coastal areas in the northeast province?" the statement questioned further.

"Hence we appeal to all Tamil speaking public servants to express their feelings that they are not prepared to be deceived anymore by Sinhala political parties and to inform the international community the true position of the Tamil speaking people," said the statement of the trade union.

Postal voting is to take place on November 7 and eligible public servants have already been notified by the Election Commission, sources in Jaffna said.
